A Dusting Of Snow

Hampshire, this morning, enjoyed its first what the BBC News called ‘a dusting of snow’. Unfortunately, although Jackie and I are both feeling a little better today, I am still not well enough to get dressed and go outside. I aimed my camera through the glass of the kitchen window. Small birds can be seen picking their way along the white coating.Snow on garden

The various avian visitors to the bird feeders normally disappear rapidly at the first sign of anyone inside, but this morning, either out of the goodness of their hearts, or from a desperate need to find food among the falling snowflakes, great and long-tailed tits swung on the peanut container, apparently oblivious of my presence.

Jackie and I both had a late breakfast of toast and croissants and mid-afternoon boiled eggs and soldiers. These soldiers, for anyone who does not know this practice, are strips of buttered bread that can be dipped into the egg. Jackie prepared something for herself later, but I, sated, had gone back to bed by then.

  1. I don’t have feeders, but have taken photos of birds through a friend’s window at her feeders. I take pictures of birds through my windows, but they are usually eating carrion. Hope you feel better soon.

  2. Indeed there are times when boiled eggs and soldiers are just the job! How kind of your garden visitors to ‘hang’ around today … I agree, the snow would have been a factor. Hope you are both feeling better soon.

  3. Get well soon! The dusting didn’t last long here but I enjoyed the waterfowl down at the reservoir, which was only partly frozen since it is large and quite deep.
There were two large flocks of geese in a field nearby who all appeared to be looking over and assessing bathing conditions pre-dip, which I found amusing.
The other day I was watching two swans, rare visitors amongst the usual ducks, coots, grebes and of course herons, my favourites.
I spent some time with my pocket camera trying to capture them, particularly with water dripping from their beaks and when they made a coughing sound and emitted little puffs of steam, as well as taking off, but all with limited success.
Anyway, just thought I’d share that since you can’t get out today.
Enjoyed your post, particularly the egg soldiers! Yum!

  4. Toast soldiers … yum. For an extra twist, adding some toasted sesame seeds to coat the yolky toast … mmmmm. Hope you’re feeling up to having some more soon!
