He Could Have Fooled Me

For lunch today Jackie drove us to Steamer Point from which we walked down to the Beach Hut Café for their plentiful breakfasts of excellent quality.

There was not much activity on the beach on this dull day. A small child was being photographed with a dog;

and rugby tackling practice was being undertaken. The older man told me that he was not athletic. He could have fooled me.

When we returned, Richard had set the new sink in place and was marking out the template for the finished top. His skilled draftsmanship would be sent to the workshop for the final fitment to be made. Everything he does is infused with his early training as a boatbuilder, and his immense pleasure in his work.

Later, he produced similar pieces for the worktops on the other side of the galley and around the former fireplace.

This evening we dined on instant vegetable soup and ham and cheese sandwiches. I drank more of the Cabernet Sauvignon.

  1. You can get a million hits by labelling that rugby sequence as a foiled mugging by a martial arts expert …
The new sink gives anything by a sinking feeling.
    Enough to make one overjoyed
    To have such craftsmanship deployed!

  2. Derrick – trying to contact you via e-mail regarding Mrs Phyllis Holman Richards. I was led to you by googling her name …a post you wrote in 2012. I would be so grateful if you could contact me concerning the above.

    Hopefully,

    Alison

  3. Wow a boat builder turned kitchen craftsman. You can’t get much better than that. It really is a bespoke kitchen. The dog in the first two shots appears to be posing nicely for the camera.

  4. Jackie will not know herself with the new kitchen, what wonders will appear on the Knights table, food worthy of Her Majesty’s table, forsooth, odds bodkins. wacko de didlio 😀

  5. I’m sure glad you have such great and accomplished workers for this special kitchen project, Derrick and Jackie! It looks wonderful with the top frame of the fireplace. I liked the beach scenery even if it were rather drab skies! ?

  6. What a wonderful job Richard is doing, and I do like the under benchtop style of the sink, a bit more work involved but the finish will look great.

  7. You have bestowed an aura on Richard the boat-builder! My mind has whisked up all kinds of ships that sailed over the oceans, turbulent and war-infested, in times ancient and new. Battlespeed, ho!

  8. I am so inspired by Richard. His attitude towards life could be applied to many trades and professions. Love seeing the progression of your kitchen rebuild. Can’t wait to read about the inaugural meal. Sure hope there are pictures.

  9. I can see that good progress is being made in the kitchen. I am glad that you and Jackie have plenty of places to go for your meals. It does get expensive dining out so often!

  10. With Richard having been a Boat builder, I feel that the craftsmanship in the final analysis will be a very beautiful and functional kitchen Derrick
