The Sun Gleefully Exclaimed

Well into this glorious October spell we still have a profusion of blooms brightening the garden.

Here is a small selection.

Jacqueline spent the day meeting James and Mark and visiting Mum. Late this afternoon Jackie drove me around the forest.

Two ponies foraging on Sowley Lane were caked in dried mud up to their flanks. We wondered where they had been. In the gradually filling ditches perhaps.

Further on, against the backdrop of the ancient granary barn ruins outside St Leonard’s Grange, another somnolent equine group cast long shadows across the sward.

We passed our home and drove on to Mudeford in order to admire the expected sunset. Ultimately sinking rapidly, the sun gleefully exclaimed at the view.

In the fading light gulls squabbled over food tossed skywards by a kindly couple and gentler hues replaced the earlier golden glow.

This evening, Jackie and I dined on her splendid sausage casserole; sautéed potatoes and onions; and crisp carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli. Jackie drank Hoegaarden and I drank Doom Bar.

  1. Is this all with your new lens? The photos are so lovely…….. as your shadows grow longer, ours grow shorter. Siddy and I were out walking at 7am today – under a beautiful blue sky with soft, gentle air and the sound of birds singing and bees buzzing….. No traffic as it’s a holiday Monday today 🙂

    1. Enjoy the day, Pauline. The garden pictures were with another Sigma, capable of focussing from .3 mm to infinity; all the others with a Canon 70-300. I’ve had those for a while, bought at different times. Thanks very much

  2. Glorious October indeed! There’s such an energetic pull at this time of year …. capturing the sweetness of the low sun. Thank you Derrick ?

      1. I went to Greenwich on the 21st October 2005, expecting something special. Absolutely nothing! Big disappointment. They were getting the Painted Hall ready for a celebratory dinner with HRH The Duke of York as the rep for the Firm.
Seems they held the celebrations in June when they could expect a good day ; one might say ” Typical!”

  3. What a day! A day filled with varied and beautiful sights. That glorious sunset, the silhouettes of birds, their reflections on the shallow water, and then the gentle hues of late afternoon. Wonderful!

  4. Wonderful photos!!!!!!!!! Have a nice week!!
How beautiful a new sun is when it rises,
flashing out its greeting, like an explosion!
    – Happy, whoever hails with sweet emotion
its descent, nobler than a dream, to our eyes!
I remember! I’ve seen all, flower, furrow, fountain,
swoon beneath its look, like a throbbing heart…
    – Let’s run quickly, it’s late, towards the horizon,
to catch at least one slanting ray as it departs!
But I pursue the vanishing God in vain:
    irresistible Night establishes its sway,
full of shudders, black, dismal, cold:
an odour of the tomb floats in the shadow,
at the swamp’s edge, feet faltering I go,
bruising damp slugs, and unexpected toads.
    Charles Baudelaire

  5. A lovely sunset well-captured, Derrick. You still have lots of flowers in the garden, so nice. We’ve had a killing frost so all is done until spring, alas.

  6. This is the time of year when we have the same flowers blooming though our spring is still warmer than your autumn. Today’s forecast Sydney 14ºC – 18ºC; London 10ºC – 14ºC ––maybe you are warmer than London?
