Nugget, You’ve Got Mail

This morning while Jackie applied herself to unearthing food for Nugget, I occupied myself with dead-heading roses. The two photographs above are a day’s relief for eyes which struggled with yesterday’s “Where’s Nugget?”.

Hearing Jackie clearly speaking Avian I thought at first she had been addressing her little robin, but in fact it was “those ruddy randy pigeons”.

Here are two examples of the Head Gardener’s happy planting. We have pink Japanese anemones fronting similarly hued phlox in the first picture and a melange of begonias, pelargoniums, fuchsias, more of the anemones in the patio bed.

Lwbut has requested close ups of the Japanese anemones. There you go, Bob.

There is evidence from their webs that we are breeding vegan spiders – either that or they are currently constantly being disappointed.

Bees are busy with cosmoses, and sampling various vintages of Summer Wine.

Clematis has granted her presence to the Rose Garden arbour.

Although we have flotillas of Small White butterflies fluttering throughout the garden, we have very few other species, but we do have humming bird moths in phlox.

This afternoon Nugget received his first piece of snail mail.

This card, when opened, plays a recording of a robin’s song. The words inside, in Auntie Becky’s handwriting, state that she chose the card for the words – i.e. the birdsong.

Jackie and I spent a considerable amount of time getting our heads round how to record stuff on her camera. We managed it. I uploaded it into my computer and WordPress wouldn’t support the file format. I was, of course, my usual phlegmatic self on discovering this.

With the late afternoon growing duller and cooler, my chauffeuse drove us on a short trip into the forest.

A colourful range of heathers and bracken beginning to brown spread carpets across the moorland beside Holmsley Passage.

We thought it best to allow this beefy bovine free passage on the Burley road.

We spotted these rather splendid mushrooms along Bisterne Close.

Jackie produced a lovely lamb’s liver casserole with creamy mashed potatoes, crunchy cauliflower and carrots with tender green beans for our dinner this evening. She drank Hoegaarden and I drank more of the Malbec.

  1. <3 Brilliant move Becky!! I hope Nugget took the gift of recorded birdsong in good spirit and didn't attempt to drive the card from his garden 🙂 Vegan spiders huh? Leading the world in arachnid enlightenment!

      1. I’m not expert enough to identify them (and they are close to the end of their life cycle). But have a look at the astonishing array you have: thenewforestguide.co.uk/biodiversity/fungi

  2. Wonderful photos, as always. I enjoyed rambling through your garden and surroundings today. The mushroom shots are splendid, but so are the bees and hummingbird moths on the flowers. How lovely that Nugget got mail (but not a bill). 🙂
Oh also–Jackie’s avian speech gave me a chuckle.

  3. How wonderful! That is THE best kind of snail-mail! I hope Nugget sang along! If there was a snail included in the snail-mail, would Nugget eat it? 😮 😀

Love the beautiful mushrooms! ? Always love your beautiful bird ? , butterfly ? , and bee ? photos! Nature is a’buzzin’ and a’hummin’! 🙂 Even he ruddy-randy pigeon has lovely feathers! 🙂

    A joke for today…
Where does the beefy bovine walk?
    Anywhere it wants to! 😛

A vegan spider! ? Ha! 😀 Maybe the spider’s diet was bugging him so he made a change? 😉 😛
    Another joke for today…
    What do spiders eat?
I don’t know. Go look on the Web. 😀

    Okay. I’ll go now. 😛

HUGS!!! for you and Jackie!!! 🙂
    TWEET-TWEETS for Nugget!!!

  4. I love that Nugget got mail! We should start a YouTube Channel for him then it could go viral and he’d get all kinds of mail! Work on that, Derrick. 🙂 Gorgeous photos! I needed these today.

    1. I just upload videos for free on YouTube (you’ll need a Google account) and then post the link to my WordPress posts. I go to the spot where I want the video to appear, Copy-Paste-Viola! It works great.

  5. Goodonya Nugget, fan mail, maybe more to come, for the Robin’s nest, there’s sure to be a nesting mate somewhere……….

  6. I still can’t get over how much of your garden is still in bloom! Pretty soon Nugget is going to be so famous that mail will be delivered to him addressed: Nugget, England.

  7. The heather is stunning, as are your garden photos. I love that Nugget got mail. He’s quite the personality. And his current shots are quite a bit easier to spot than that lamp one.

    You guys are so fun!

  8. On a casual glance those petals look suspended in mid air. With the recording and uploading snafu, it seems a reply to the mail received by Nugget will have to wait. The cow looks cute with her ear ornaments.

  9. Much to delight in here, Derrick–the heather, Nugget’s witty card, those anemones, and your “usual phlegmatic self”, which made me chuckle as I recognized a comment such as I would make (in jest).

  10. A beautiful start to my day! ? Your photos are stunning, carrying your garden and outdoors vividly and vibrantly across the internet. I could almost hear the buzzing of the bees on those flowers and how lucky to be blessed with ‘ flotillas of Small White butterflies’.

  11. GC recently had the same problem with his Canon camera. I gave him this advice and it worked.
If you are using a PC and not a Mac, open windows Movie Maker, then navigate to your saved video. When Movie Maker has finished opening the video, save it again but click the option ‘For Facebook.’ Your video is now saved in a format that WordPress can read.

Your difficulty with the camera format has given me another idea for our How To Page on Weekly Prompts. I will get to it this morning seeing as I have little else on.

      1. I read that article once before. Videos do take up storage space, but the odd ones now and again are not enough to panic about. For longish videos I have used Vimeo as a host. I can’t remember how much free space we are allowed but I do have a good number stored there.
And that’s another idea for my How To Page.

I would guess that your Mac will have a built in Movie Maker type program and using the Facebook format (not uploading to it) also reduces the file size for WordPress. I’ll ask my grandson he has a Mac.

  12. Derrick,
Just wanted to let you know that when I get an e-mail update from LordBeariOfBow’s daughter, I will put it in the comment section of his last WP post. So check back there once in awhile to see the latest.
    Thank you so much!
    Carolyn ?

      1. Here is the latest update several of us received from Brian’s daughter…

Brian is now in palliative care. They would still like to get him home but he’s too weak and unable to do anything for himself. He could last days or weeks but he could also last in this state for months. They had hoped he would regain some strength and be able to get online again, but even that’s doubtful at this stage.

        🙁 🙁 🙁

  13. Thank you so much for the Japanese anemones Derrick!

From the close-up it would seem they are closely genetically related to the Poppy, papaver rhoeas, as the anthers and stamen are virtually identical. 🙂

Nugget’s fame is spreading far and wide, and deservedly so! 🙂

As Gwen hinted You-tube is definitely the way to go to place videos on WordPress, i’ve used it several times for my honeyeater videos and astronomic captures of the planets. it’s easy and hassle free. 🙂

I was looking for Heathcliffe somewhere amongst the heather and bracken but could not find him. 😉

  14. I would like to have been a fly on the wall when you were your usual phlegmatic self. ?as for the lambs liver, I’m with the vegetarian spider. ?

  15. haha, I had a feeling that Nugget would become a celebrity in his own friendly way. He did pick the perfect family to attach himself to!
It looks like your countryside is already getting prepared for the winter. We have to start getting ready for Hurricane Dorian.

  16. I hope Nugget appreciated the thoughtful gift! What were the pigeons doing that led Jackie to go into such bird-speak? I thought it was past the breeding season now.

  17. I think the vegan spider movement has crossed the Atlantic … ours currently appear enamoured of a flurry of strawberry petals the advance front of an immanent storm blew off the plants. 🙂
