The Early Evening Light

This morning I completed my mega filing task while Jackie carried out more planting under the watchful eye of Nugget

with whom she happily conversed. “Where’s Nugget?” (25).

Beside the Weeping Birch Bed with its kniphofias, petunias, heleniums, and pelargoniums.

The yellow kniphofia is Popsicle Mango; the terracotta one has attracted a wasp.

Small White butterflies and bees still cluster around the verbena bonariensises.

continue to thrive.

Autumn crocuses have arrived.

The Rose Garden, the Palm Bed, and the Oval Bed glow with aureate colour;

spiders have spun fine chains for golden seeds;

Virginia creeper is beginning to take on a ruby hue,

with which penstemons are trimmed.

Early this warm and sunny evening we took a drive into the forest.

I disembarked from the car on the road between Brockenhurst and Beaulieu.

I walked along a gravelled path and over the dry terrain,

the sweeping sounds of my sandals answering those of the jaws of the ponies cropping the grass they shared with a few cattle joining them on their way in from the verges.

This evening we dined on Hordle Chinese Take Away’s usual fine fare with which Jackie drank Blue Moon and I drank sparkling water.

  1. It looks like a beautiful day to be out in the garden. I wonder if Nugget gave Jackie any advice?
    Beautifully photographed spider web, and I love the lighting on the horse in the last photo.

  2. Nugget really is so tiny in comparison to his adopted mama – it’s a wonder we can ever find him! I’m glad to read you can wander along gravelled byways happily – all must be well in the knees department…….

    1. Much better, Pauline, although after sitting with knees bent for hours the previous day I didn’t even want to get out of the car – but you know me……. Thanks a lot

  3. I’m having a bad eye day today so your gorgeous photos were just what the doctor ordered, Derrick. Little Nugget just loves Jackie, doesn’t he? Don’t get jealous…lol! Love the gravel path!

  4. So good to see Nugget! He’s being a bit shady today! πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜› I think he thinks he is a human-bean. Ha! (I think my Cooper thinks he’s a human-bean, too.) Love the love between Nugget and Jackie! <3
    Lovely day and photos, Derrick! The ponies and cows look carefree and happy…You've captured them so wonderfully! πŸ™‚ That white pony is so beautiful!
    Sparkling-HUGS!!! πŸ˜€ to you and Jackie!!!
    TWEETS to Nugget!!! πŸ™‚

  5. I love how Nugget comes so close to Jackie. I feel that he must like her very much πŸ˜‰ And I am happy he survived the altercation with the other robin. As always, you share the wildlife of your neighborhood so beautifully, thank you.

  6. An especially fine collection, especially the spider’s web. I have been away for 18 days and was delighted to find that the garden had looked after itself splendidly in that time and I have got a fridge full of runner beans!

  7. I was delighted to spot Nugget and I’m so glad he’s still with you. Have you noticed that after enlarging the second photo, those terracotta flowers could so easily pass for exotic birds!

  8. Love the bond between you, Jackie and Nugget! Nugget might hug the limelight but today he’s shunning the sunlight! πŸ˜‰

    Fuschias are some of my favourite flowers, sadly i have no luck keeping them in our hotter climate.

    The photos of the forest and animals in the evening sunlight are beautiful, the grey in the last pic in particular! πŸ™‚

  9. Very sneaky having Nugget in the shadows, Derrick! haha
    With all the ponies and other animals chopping on the grass – does anyone in your area need a lawn mower? πŸ™‚

  10. Such beauty in your garden! Took me awhile to find little Nugget, but find him I did. Wish we had a good Chinese restaurant nearby, but central Maine is a Chinese restaurant wasteland.

  11. The splendour of early evening light has combined with your exceptional skills of choosing your subjects. Mr Nugget is in the shadow of the mauve basket.

  12. Derrick, a fellow blogger I follow has had knee surgery and is in a lot of pain. Being as I know very little about it, except for you, I have boldly given her your link.

  13. I see the bird fued of a few days ago, if Nugget was involved, tured out in his favor. Again, some very impressive photos of the spider web and the horses milling about. I’m glad your headache has gone away my friend.

  14. Emilio, Sue, and I got an e-mail from Sarah with an update on LordBeariOfBow and Emilio shared the update on LBoB’s WP site in the comment section.
    Not good news. πŸ™
