Only So Much Rain

We have now realised that the birds partaking of the front garden feeders are field residents from across the road.

Their numbers now include gymnastic blue tits

and patient sparrows here waiting their turn at the trough.

Our young visitors bear only so much rain before disappearing, following further leakage from the clouds, leaving the winter flowering cherry to carry the torch for signs of life

amid dripped drops clinging to glistening branches,

dotting netting; slicking crab apples; offering sparkle to the dank morning.

before a further temporary lull lured the great

and blue tits back for a brief breakfast refill.

The grey day gathered relentless gloom.

This evening we dined on Jackie’s spicy pork paprika, special savoury rice, and stringless runner beans, with which she drank Hoegaarden and I finished the Malbec.

      1. I hope that he has found himself dry quarters in one of the teapots/nest boxes that I have provided (he has 6 options) but I suspect he will ignore them and has found somewhere cosy. He is always dry feathered and bushy tailed in the mornings though!

  1. Gorgeous pictures of your feathery friends. We’ve had 2 months’ of rain in 48 hours! It’s at times like these I’m glad I a) live on a hill b) live in a 5th floor flat.

    1. I couldn’t agree more! I love these moody days the scenery is special, and it is actually not that cold.

  2. I love your bird visitors!
I love love love how the drops of rain sparkle like Christmas lights! The lantern photo, the photo above it, and the photo below it made me smile and get a bit teary-eyed…joy-tears! 🙂
Wish you could box up the rain and send it to places who need it so desperately.
We had rain/snow 3 days last week…the ground is still muddy…and we are to have 2 or 3 more days of it this week.
HUGS to you and Jackie!!! 🙂
PS…How is your Mum doing this week?
PPS…Guess What?!?! For dinner we had yellow corn tortillas, pink grilled salmon, red and green chunky salsa, black beans, and brown rice. I thought you might like to hear about our colorful meal! 🙂

  3. Nugget probably goes to shelter in the place where he spends the night. This would be perhaps a tree or bush with very heavy foliage that will not let water through. In our garden they like the larch, although that is losing its leaves now. When they are all gone, it will be the leylandii evergreen.

  4. I couldn’t spot any blue on the Blue Tits – do you know why they have that name? Maybe the light is not right. What gorgeous photos you have here: particularly the winter flowering cherry (I did not know there was any tree that flowered in winter), and the slicked crap applies. You are right, raindrops add sparkle to otherwise dull days.
