In The Rain

Heavy, steady, rain fell throughout most of the day.

I photographed the scenes from indoors. The pendant in the rain spattered window was made for me by the daughter of a client some thirty years ago. The fallen pot was blown down. If there are any more we don’t want to know about it.

I looked down on the garden from upstairs.

Seen from our bedroom window, the puddle in the gutter outside our front drive is a good rain gauge.

At mid morning we left in the rain for a damp forest drive. I had expected simply to make photographs from the car. In the event I couldn’t help myself, so Jackie parked on the verge of Braggers Lane where I found raindrops spiralling in puddles; damp trees; and

damper field horses, some in rugs rooting around, I think for acorns – poisonous to them – in puddles behind barbed wire.

This evening we dined on Jackie’s cracking chicken stoup and crusty bread, followed by ample apple pie and custard, with which she drank Hoegaarden and I drank more of the Shiraz.

  1. I can really appreciate your photographs of the rain for we have enjoyed (for the first time in MONTHS) a day of mist, light drizzle and cold that has yielded 20mm so far. It is HEAVEN!

  2. We could do with some of that rain to put out the wildfires across California. Love your photos of the puddle in the gutter outside our front drive and the damp forest tree–an excellent composition–in its glory.

  3. I think lots of us have some kind of unofficial “rain gauge” like your gutter. Glad you got some rain, even if your pot paid for it. I think this is the first time I have noticed horses that look like draft horse stock in you photos of the local equine population. And my does Jackie’s soup and pie look absolutely irresistible!

  4. Warning to readers: never read Derrick’s posts when you’re hungry because Jackie’s cooking will make you want to eat your screen. That bread looks fantastic as does the soup. Perfect for a rainy day.

  5. Your supper looks really good–and perfect for a rainy day! I had to biggify the intriguing pendant to get a better look. Ceramic? My favorites out of this group are “Tree Trunk and Fence” and “Oak Trees.”

  6. It rained all day here too and I did not set a foot outside, but it has helped make your pictures atmospheric. I liked the slate patchwork effect on the patio.

  7. Your rainy day photos are divine, Derrick! I love rain! (Hey, could you box some up and send it our way?!) 😀 The rain makes everything, cleaner, brighter, clearer, more colourful! YAY, rain!!! 🙂
The pendant in your window is so beautiful! 🙂
Love the puddles and the ponies! Looks like a fly-free day for the ponies! YAY! 🙂
Photo #15 from the top…so cool! Looks like Mother Nature’s drapes! 🙂

BTW: When you describe Jackie’s chef-ing delights so deliciously it makes me hungry! NOW, to SEE them, too…YIKES…made my tummy growl! 😉 😀 Looks like a perfect rainy day meal!!! 🙂

    HUGS!!! 🙂

  8. Rain is always good but at times enough is enough. The rain has brought out the coloured foliage in your garden. Hopefully there wasn’t and more pots down.

  9. The photos through the window worked very well..Lovely angles and shots. Why do the horses eat the acorns if they are poisonous to them? I thought animals knew about such things. Jackie’s soup made me hungry even though I’ve just eaten..

  10. The gardens are beautiful, even in the rain! The forest scenes look in subdued lighting look peaceful, and the horses stoically waiting it out. I wouldn’t mind a quiet rainy day or two here. 🙂

  11. You have profiled the rain exceedingly well against the exuberant canvas of the Garden. Outdoors, not surprisingly, you have found out your favourite subjects.

  12. beautiful rainy day photos, Derrick! the garden looks divine in the rain! the horses must be hungry. 🙂 the soup and pie are perfect for rainy day!

  13. not a drop of rain down-under but that’s not to say that summer of spring is truly here – in a few weeks like it will be winter of spring again and I’ll be thinking of putting the heating right back on!

  14. I watched the Everton-Brighton game on BT and I thought that at any moment the referee would abandon it. It absolutely lashed down for 90 minutes. Here in Nottingham, it was just miserable heavy drizzle, nothing dramatic, just unsuitable for venturing out !

  15. Love the photography of the rain and the pictures of the horses, especially the black and white. It was a very sunny day in Brighton where I had gone yesterday so it was nice to have that contrast as I left a rainy London in the morning.

  16. I love the rain — perfect for curling up with a good book. Looks like you had some fun with photographs despite the dreary weather. Love the horse photos as always!

  17. Lovely apple pie – my compliments to the chef!
It seems that the flowers in your garden do not mind the rain, and neither do the horses in the forest. Interesting black and whites, thank you, and fascinating spirals in the puddle.
