On The Approach To September

After lunch on a warmly sun-kissed day I poked my camera out of the upstairs windows to introduce it to

the garden views on the approach to September.

I then read more of Charles Dickens’s ‘Our Mutual Friend’, and scanned the next four of Charles Keeping’s memorable illustrations.

‘She sat on the ground, with her face leaning on her hand’

‘The bird of prey lay stretched upon the shore’

‘A gloomy house the Bower’

‘Hooked on the board by the armpits was a young gentleman of tender years’

Early this evening I posted https://derrickjknight.com/2021/08/25/a-knights-tale-21-the-summer-of-1947/

Later, we dined on Red Chilli excellent takeaway fare. We ordered enough for two days, consisting of Saag Chicken, Saag and Onion Bhajis, Tandoori King Prawn Naga, Paneer Tikka, Egg Fried Rice, and a plain Naan. Jackie drank more of the Greco di Tufo and I drank more of the Dao.

  1. I always enjoy your garden views from above to get the full effect of the garden. I love this description: ‘Hooked on the board by the armpits was a young gentleman of tender years’!

  2. Your looking down on the garden from above photos are some of my faves!
A few of these could be “Where’s Florence?” photos! 🙂 She is so lovely and seeing her is always a day-brightener! 🙂
I wonder if, through the years, any child ever colour-ed in Mr. Keeping’s illustrations with crayons or coloured pencils. ??? HA! 🙂 As a little girl, I would’ve been tempted to! 🙂
    (((HUGS))) 🙂

    1. Thanks very much, Carolyn. I pleased you thought of “Where’s Florence?” I imagine the drawings would be tempting. We both uttered scared laughs at that. X

  3. Good Morning Derrick, although I have slept in an missed most of the morning, it’s after 10.00am already … I do enjoy your overhead photos of your magnificent gardens … and again my favourite Keepings drawing today was was your scan, ‘A gloomy house the Bower’ ..

  4. Your Camera is like a telepathic instrument that has brought to us the onset of September in all its moods in your garden. The instalments from Keeping fascinate me perennially.

  5. Apart from the magnificence of the garden might I just thank you for the illustration of the girl seated in front of the brasier. Brilliant.

  6. And, through the magic of the internet, I have found a recipe for chicken saag. It sounds yummy, and probably easy enough for a lazy cook like me.

  7. The view from your upstairs window promises a lush garden below.

I love the drawing of the girl leaning on her hand.

  8. Wonderful views of your garden! It’s beautiful and seems so luxuriously large (which I know means more work). Love the illustrations too. They make me want to read the story!

  9. I am still enjoying those lovely garden views and illustrations by Charles Keeping, Derrick.

We had about 5 minutes of a passing light rain about 10:00 PM last night. Still dry here, and will be for some time.

  10. This set of illustrations demonstrates Mr Keeping’s exceptional skill of expressing emotions by thin wavy lines, as well as using unusual composition to emphasize the point by the upside down body of a drowned man.
    Your garden is marvelous, Derrick.

  11. Oh, as everyone already said and is obvious, you and the Head Gardner do a magnificent job there. I can see how much work it must be and you have it looking so lovely. The upstairs shots are helpful to imagine it. 🙂

  12. It’s been a very strange year, this one. 2020 seemed to go on forever, but 2021 has flown by at a great rate of knots, and here we are on the cusp of Autumn.
