Later, I scanned the next five of Charles Keeping’s illustrations to Charles Dickens’s ‘Our Mutual Friend’, demonstrating the artist’s considerable versatility.
‘ ‘Does anybody down there know what has happened?’ once more admirably depicts the fog – this time in a text sandwich.
‘Sweet delusion for Pleasant Riderhood’
‘Bella arrived in the Boffin Chariot’
‘Mr Boffin had a child’s delight in looking at shops’ makes use of a two page spread.
‘They stood interlocked like a couple of preposterous gladiators’
This evening we dined on baked gammon moistened by juicy ratatouille; boiled new potatoes; firm carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli, with which Jackie drank Hoegaarden and I drank more of the Fleurie.
I like the depictions of the fog.

As Liz mentioned, I like the 2 page spread of the shops too… such an effective way to depict the busy terrace, at the top of dense text like that.
Ratatouille seems the perfect dish for this time of the year, with the courgettes, onions and last tomatoes being harvested… my aubergine are nearly ready for picking, too! Jackie’s ability with menu design is as stellar as her planting plans 🙂

It is actually a matter of class and upbringing. My preference is dinner, but in my childhood dinner was what is now lunch and supper was a snack before bed. Thanks very much, Cynthia. I believe it was an American who had a takeaway Indian meal sent over by chartered plane – but we can’t run to that 🙂
