Under The Red Umbrella

This morning I posted https://derrickjknight.com/2021/10/02/a-knights-tale-44-a-concerned-single-father/

Later, with the storm winds blowing at 50+ m.p.h. and the pelting rain bouncing off the Prebendal School red umbrella that she struggled to hold aloft, a cheerful Jan wandered round the garden, determined to photograph the plants she had got to know through WordPress. Negotiating the various arches was managed most adroitly, despite the danger of taking to the air like Mary Poppins.

I, of course, lurked with camera,

trying not to look too closely at further damage.

Later, Jan, De, and Jackie enjoyed ‘Miss Potter’ on Netflix, and after one of Jackie’s splendid cold meats and salad lunches, the others all went shopping while I amused myself with WordPress and administration.

‘As Good As It Gets’ was the next Netflix fix, after which we dined on Jackie’s most flavoursome sausages in red wine; creamy mashed potatoes and suede; firm carrots, cauliflower and broccoli; and tender runner beans. Bruce Jack Sauvignon Blanc 2021, Apothic Californian red wine 2019, and 1000 Stories Zinfandel 2018 were consumed.

  1. I don’t know Jan, but she looks delightful in her splendid blue patchwork and red umbrella. Quite a photo shoot!
It sounds like a cozy time with movies and meals. I’ve had some Apothic wines.

  2. Derrick, Jan is such a wonderful model/subject for your photos! Her smile makes me smile! 🙂

Thank you, Jan! Your joy shines through! 🙂 OhMyGosh! Your jacket is so beautiful! Love the blues in patchwork! 🙂
(((HUGS))) and <3 to all!!!!! 🙂

  3. In her beautiful quilted jacket under the bright red umbrella, Jan looks completely enthralled as she wandered through your garden! A great set of photos!

  4. The blues and the reds that Jan brought to your garden were certainly a burst of fun, as were her smiles. I loved that you said you “lurked with your camera.” <3

  5. We are experiencing stormy weather here Geelong as well Derrick, and my umbrella has constantly been at the front door lately, ready for our next soggy outing …

  6. So jealous of Jan. Hoping one day I will be roaming Jackie’s creativity too. But honestly, it Jan’s jacket I covet. She has good taste. 🙂 Have a great time with your visitors.

    1. If you ever get down here on one of your UK trips you know you would both be welcome. I promise there would be no work on the ceiling required. Thanks very much, Sylvia.

  7. Those were high winds! I enjoyed your photo shoot with Jan. I remember ‘Mary Poppins’, and tried to jump off a chair with an umbrella when I was young. It didn’t work. 🙂 I saw ‘As Good As It Gets’. It was a great movie.

  8. Pelting rain, relentless wind and a red umbrella, propping and propelling the lady around the garden with a mission of her own, make for an interesting subject.

  9. I’m sure that I remember a red umbrella as something special. I watched “Le ballon rouge” and I loved the film title “Les Parapluies de Cherbourg” without ever seeing it. Perhaps I’m mixing the two up,but it’s reslly bugging me at the moment!

  10. The Red Umbrella would make a great title for a book/film assuming there isn’t one already.

I love the sound of your boozy evening meal. Ours was a Chinese takeaway, Malbec for me and Gin and tonic for Joss while listening to the granddaughter’s sixteenth birthday party next door.

  11. How interesting that other commenters noticed Jan’s lovely blue patchwork jacket because I noticed it, as well, and thought how nice it looked with the red umbrella.

  12. Love the red umbrella and reminds me of a movie or a video (don’t recall the name) where a character wondered around ( I believe) Paris is a red umbrella in a sea of black umbrellas. Sounds the visit has been a huge success.

  13. I used to have a very splendid large red umbrella which I’ve been lamenting while reading this. Liverpool’s blustery winds did for mine. This one is even more splendid.

  14. It’s rather difficult for me to comment on the website rather than through the app. It’s shocking how you weren’t informed of Michael’s fit.

  15. I believe there’s another bout of nasty weather coming your way curtesy of that hurricane that’s been bouncing around the Atlantic all week.
