A Knight’s Tale (72: Upstaged)

The Tokyo Diner at the corner of Newport Street now occupies the site of the laundrette featured inย a television film, as far as I remember, about a search for accommodation by a young mother with two small children.

Back in the 1970s I had been sitting in my local Soho launderette watching our washing circulating when a film crew came in, ushered everyone else out, and asked me to remain to stay in shot for a particular sequence.  On transmission evening we all sat in front of the telly eagerly awaiting my star performance.  In the launderette scene it was momentarily possible, unless you blinked, to see an elbow which could just possibly have been mine.

Shortly afterwards, filling the screen, was my son Michael, with his dog Piper, striding down Dean Street with a huge grin on his face.  I think you could say I had been upstaged.

  1. A beautiful story, and that is a sweet photo of Michael and Piper. At least you were upstaged by your own son and his pup, not a stranger. ๐Ÿ™‚ You have had so many adventures in your life, Derrick!

      1. Your Michael’s tree got his winter protective deer fence installed recently. The daffodils around the tree all got a good later of composted manure as well. In spring it will be beautiful, and I will send a photo. The tree, a western incense cedar, is growing fast!

  2. HA! Poor you! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜€
Upstaged in THE best way ever! Those two sweet faces!!!!!!!!!!!! What a precious photo! ๐Ÿ™‚
Oh, well, you probably didn’t have time for fans, fame, and fortune. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. These snippets from your past are turning out to be highly amusing. At least one of your elbows had a nanosecond of fame. As for Michael, he literally stole the show!

  4. I can imagine the disappointment quickly followed by cheers for Michael and his dog. I’d love to see that clip. Looking forward to more famous moments!
