Soggy Sustenance

On a mizzly murky morning we drove to Lymington for a few final present purchases.

The window of the Oakhaven Children’s Charity Shop in the High Street and the front green of the Church of St Thomas and All Angels both bore Nativity scenes, while the latter contained a bed of remembrance poppies beside those surrounding the War Memorial.

After a Costa coffee in a dry shop we continued into the forest in search of damp equines., of which we found some.

A donkey family munched gorse. A rather large foal attempted to vary its diet by seeking sustenance from a darker hued dam. She was not interested.

The avenue into Ashenwood dripped silently, as did

St Leonard’s Road’s bare oaks,

along the muddy verges of which

our oft-seen friends, now with matted coats sought soggy sustenance.

This evening we dined on fried eggs, chips, and baked beans with which Jackie drank Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2021 and I drank more of the Lirac.

  1. Awww, those poor donkeys and horses, they look so miserable! It’s great to be inside a warm, dry car, right! Great photos of the wet critters, Derrick, stay dry!

  2. Mizzly is a wonderful word. I’m going to have to remember it!
I think my favorite photo is the one with the reflected gate, but St. Leonard’s road looks both mysterious and beckoning.
Of course, I love the donkeys, who look forlorn, and the ponies. The first white pony looks like she (?) is talking to you.

    1. I agree with you about “mizzly.” I’d never seen it before. The photo of the first white pony is my favorite. She(?) seemed to be saying, “Here I am–you rang?”

  3. The close up of wet pony coats makes me feel like I’m there – damp and a bit chilly. I console myself be believing these ponies and donkeys are a hardy bunch.

  4. Such beautiful touches of remembrance and of the holidays in your photos.
And you know I love the donkeys! 🙂
We are having a rainy day and for the next week we are to have rain AND snow. 🙂
So it will be mizzly here, too. HA! 😀 We hope we don’t smell like wet equine. 😮
    (((HUGS))) 🙂

      1. Ha! I am. Mostly when we give him baths. He doesn’t like the rain, so he does his business outside quickly on rainy days like yesterday and today. Snow expected this weekend! He likes snow! 🙂

  5. We always called it ‘mizzle and drist’ — akin to your term ‘mizzly,’ for sure. I especially enjoyed the photo of the oaks along St. Leonard’s Road.

  6. I enjoyed all these photos from your day, Derrick and Jackie. The road and leafy trail photos disappearing into the mists and around the bend are enticing. I wish I could step into those scenes and go walking. The donkeys, ponies, especially the little ones, are always a treat. All are waiting out the cold and wet.

  7. Mizzly! What a great word! Don’t be surprised if you see it in one of my poems. That is a great photo of the white horse.

  8. Merry Christmas to all the Knights out there! Thanks for the continuous gifts of photos you have been bringing to your readers regardless of the vagaries of the weather.
