Chasing Her Stick

This morning I published https://derrickjknight.com/2022/01/28/a-knights-tale-96-kings-lynn/

During mid afternoon we took a forest drive to Puttles Bridge and back.

Several groups of walkers set out on the flat and reasonably dry trail through the woodland, while I chose

the wetter area alongside Ober Water, with its ripples, reflections, mossy stumps and gnarly roots.

It was there I met Steve and Fizzy, his twelve year old companion with the spring of a puppy who never tired of chasing and returning her thrown stick. We had an enjoyable conversation.

The sun was weakening as we returned home via Brockenhurst where ponies cropped the soggy verges.

What, I wondered, had chewed the lichen-covered log lying in a Winterbourne stream.

This evening we dined on duck in orange sauce, soft centred and crispy coated; crunchy carrots; boiled baby potatoes; tender runner beans and cabbage, with which Jackie drank Hoegaarden and I drank more of the Shiraz.

  1. So many wonderful photos here. I love whole series of dog photos, especially the header.
But the nature shots are beautiful, too–the roots and branches look like mythical creatures coated in green.
I wonder, too, what chewed the log.

  2. Oh, the photos of Fizzy and Steve bring the smiles!!! šŸ™‚ Fizzy is so proud to bring the stick back in good form!
A beautiful day filled with trees, clouds, ponies, streams, bubbles, ripples, moss, the sun trying to peep through AND a doggy = perfection! šŸ™‚

  3. I enjoyed your forest drive photos, Derrick and Jackie, especially the dog playing in the water with his stick. He looks very happy. šŸ™‚

    Your dinner sounds good!

  4. Soft green moss, sturdy ponies, and a big dog having fun! – these are a few of my favorite things. Thanks, Derrick. I always enjoy Ober Water.

  5. I love seeing a happy dog! And I think it was likely a hungry deer that ate the lichen. They do that. I can’t remember exactly what lichen are, but they’re a strange combination of fungi and something that produces chlorophyll? I should look it up–two things with a symbiotic relationship.

  6. You have brought home the wet, mossy landscape with those shots. The dog is only too eager to please in contrast to the nonchalance of ponies.

  7. I did so like the reflections along the Ober Water. And particularly the one where the dog has dropped the stick but Steve has turned his back. I am trying to imagine what the dog is saying.

  8. It might sound daft, but do you have any beavers in your area yet? They seem to spread very quickly and apparently most of the Scottish counties already have some.

  9. What a super set of images. Oh, I loved seeing Fizzy, a long time ago we had a German Shepherd just like her but at twelve years old, our beautiful Heidi was certainly not capable of running around like Fizzy.

  10. I would love to have a walking trail where there were dogs, ponies, donkeys, pigs, and the likes that you come across. Thank you for introducing us to Fizzy! What a beautiful, healthy dog. ?
