A Keeping Range

I felt so much better today that I was beginning to get itchy feet, especially when Jackie and Flo went for a shopping trip this afternoon. Common sense prevailed and I stayed at home and read four more chapters of ‘Bleak House’.

Earlier, I had posted https://derrickjknight.com/2022/04/06/a-knights-tale-123-nearing-leicester/

Later, I scanned the next set of Charles Keeping’s inimitable illustrations to Dickens’s novel.

‘Near journey’s end’ is startlingly accurate.

‘A very quiet night’ demonstrates the artist’s ease with architecture.

In ‘Mr Bucket takes Quebec and Malta on his knees’ the child’s expression displays her doubt about the unusual attention from a virtual stranger.

A mother’s tenderness is portrayed in ‘I used to lay my small namesake in her arms’

This evening we dined on Jackie’s wholesome cottage pie with sautéed potato topping; crunchy carrots, firm broccoli, and tender runner beans, followed by rice pudding which, having been left in my charge, needed a certain amount of revivification.

  1. How about a stroll around the garden tomorrow for some fresh air?
I’m so happy you are all getting better. It’s scary these days when someone says they don’t feel feel!!

  2. Of course your mention of Mr. Bucket took me straight back to the television series, “Keeping Up Appearances,” and Hyacinth’s insistence that the name should be pronounced “Bouquet.” My mother and I used to watch the show regularly, and laughed mightily at the pretension and highjinks. I’m glad you’re feeling better, and I appreciate the memories!

  3. So so SO glad you are feeling better, Derrick!
That last Mr. Keeping illustration is amazing and got me joy-teary-eyed!
Revivification! Great word! So I am assuming the rice pudding got revivificated. ??? HA! I mean revivified. I’m sure you were the revivificator for the job and did wonders revivificating the pudding!!! HA! 😀
Okay, I’ll leave now before I get kicked out! 😉 😛
    (((HUGS))) 🙂

  4. Sorry to hear you’ve been unwell Derrick. More good reading sounds therapeutic. As does a good walk in the great outdoors. Take care.

  5. Derrick … you had ONE job. Sheesh! Glad the pudding could be revived.

I’m glad you’re feeling better enough to want to go out. Our rules are constantly changing, but at the moment it is, if you suspect you have COVID you are to confirm via a Rapid Antigen Test or PCR Test, and you are to report the result, which latter is relatively easily done. Then you must self-isolate for 7 days from the day you were tested. You can only leave self-isolation after 7 days if you do not have a sore throat, runny nose, cough or shortness of breath. Even then you are to take precautions in interacting with people for a further 3 days.
We currently have a number of people in our complex who are holed up in this scenario. I have been doing a door drop of café coffee for one couple for last few days.

      1. I’m sorry to hear you are poorly. Let’s hope it passes soon.
I suspected the UK rules were much more relaxed now. The scale and spread are probably too much to try to keep track of.

  6. Glad you’re ‘on the mend’ Derrick. You’ve done well to keep the posts going. My best wishes to you and thanks for your always thoroughly engaging posts and pictures. Roland (aka WHB).

  7. I am glad you are feeling much better, Derrick, and that you are taking care of yourself and staying home right now. Sometimes it does not take much physical effort when recovering to trigger a setback.

  8. Revivification – yes!! The pudding and you – both the better for having a little crustiness removed … no fun being down and out, huh Derrick? But I’m so glad common sense prevailed. Pass some of that around. The world needs more of it. Gotcha in prayer for returned health and a chance to get out & about today, Derrick. Hugs! ???❤️??
