A Photographer With Two Assistants

This afternoon Jackie took Flo and me for a drive.

We passed walkers among the grass of Saltgrass Lane, along which we

viewed low clouds giving the Isle of Wight the appearance of high mountains fronted by the Hurst Lighthouse and medieval castle; and

figures on the spit continuing along the low tide flats.

Unbeknown to each of us, while Jackie photographed a conversation with an ice cream vendor I focussed on a couple enjoying one of her wares.

The elder Assistant Photographer also photographed a perched black headed gull.

An abundance of wild flowers now carpet the verges of our lanes.

The anonymous decorator of the letter collection box on Pilley Hill has given us an Easter theme.

The last two of these pictures of a pony drinking in Pilley lake were Flo’s work.

Gentle donkeys took care of each other at East Boldre.

Tonight we dined on Jackie’s rich red chicken jalfrezi and equally colourful savoury rice with which she drank Hoegaarden and I drank more of the Shiraz. Hard boiled eggs were added to the curry for Flo, who did not imbibe. She remembered that once when she was smaller I had made her a boiled egg curry.

  1. There are so many beautiful photos today! The seaside is beautiful the animals so cute. I love the post box, someone has very creative hands! ??❤️

  2. Wonderful shots, Derrick. The Letter Box rotating decor must be fun for all who come by. The portrait of the gull is quite striking, and well done!

  3. Your granddaughter has obviously inherited her grandfather’s talent for artistic photography. Jackie’s perched gull is also an excellent shot.
Is there a reason you have decided to do the two donkeys in black and white, Derrick? The photo truly benefits from it.

    1. Thank you very much, Dolly. In fact, Flo is by far the best artist of us all. I went for the shape of the donkeys and cropped the picture to show the tenderness. I generally convert to B/W when the form is the most important aspect.

  4. Many hands make like work! Such a wonderful selection today and the Head Chef’s Jalfrezi sauce looks yummy – recipe?

  5. So many wonderful photos–great job by all!
I thought the black and white figures on the spit were very interesting. They made me think of weathervanes.

  6. Impressive silhouettes. I especially like the figure walking on the spit with the gull. The bunny on the letter box has a pleasant, welcoming expression.

  7. I enjoyed this virtual trip with the three of you. The mysterious mailbox decorator does very nice work. What happens when it rains? Do the decorations stay out and get wet?

  8. This issue contains very fascinating long shot photos of people. The monochrome image is a classic. The candids around the ice cream truck are brilliant. There are the ubiquitous ponies to be sure.

  9. I’m running late today Derrick, it’s already dinner time on Good Friday … Jackie’s photo of the gull on the fence post is definitely going into my ‘Derrick File’

  10. Please don’t think I’m being rude, but you left me dangling at the end of your post, and I need to know what i am missing!

  11. Oh! The Assistant Photographers have learned well from The Great Photographer! Each and every photo in this posting is lovely! How nice to have the 2 of them by your side, TGP! 🙂 🙂
The photo of the gull is so beautiful! And you know I love love love photos of the donkeys! 🙂
The man/figure with the gull is frame-worthy! 🙂
(((HUGS))) to all 3 of you and thank you for taking us along with you via your photos! 🙂

  12. You and your assistants did a terrific job! Flo was ind enough to give us a look at the horse’s A*ss – I wonder if we could make an emoji out of that…um.

  13. I have never seen a black headed full. Very nice. Also, my fav photo is the silhouetted man walking up the bank. Many other nice photos, esp by b your assistants?

  14. Excellent post. My brain did a little jump at the very end – I read “Gentle donkeys” and then processed the image of Jackie’s rich red chicken jalfrezi. 😀 For a split second all those posted photos of donkeys & ponies took on a totally different context. 😀
