Martin and Jackie spent several hours between them this morning weeding and clearing; I chipped in with some of each and mostly dead heading, largely concentrating on
the Rose Garden, of which I wish I could convey the scents.
After lunch I recorded the general scenes, as usual titled in the galleries.

This evening we dined on Jackie’s succulent beef and onion pie; boiled potatoes; crisp cauliflower and carrots; tender green beans; and meaty gravy, with which the Culinary Queen drank Hoegaarden and I drank more of the Douro.

Derrick, your garden looks magical and that pie may have the prettiest crust I’ve ever seen. I was expecting berry, but the meat pie sounds delicious. I have a funny pie story. Our neighbor often cooks and brings me things. Her husband brought over a beautiful pie. It so happened that we were having company that night, so we thought we would serve the pie. Vince went out and bought some ice cream to go with it and after dinner, we were all set for apple pie, which is what it looked like from the little bit of goo that eased out. Were we all surprised when we cut into chicken pot pie. 🙂

Your garden is looking absolutely splendid! The TLC is clearly evident. I love the flower decoration on the beef and onion pie. (I’d hate to be the one to cut into it.)

A truly beautiful garden – I enjoy the aroma of roses (a pity so many modern ones have none) – and then a happy surprise to find the flower theme made it through to dinner!
As the rose garden was an abandoned veg patch when we moved in I was able to research all the roses we planted and make sure that they were all scented, all that is bar one, the persicaria rose, ‘For Your Eyes Only’, I thought it so lovely that it earned a place in the rose garden!
Jackie, this was a marvellous thing to do – and now you can both reap the benefits of all that research. Thank you for this!

You reminded me of a news stories I have heard recently about bringing scent to smartphones and gallery paintings – it sounds awful to me, but the idea is that scent is so powerful in creating a human emotional reaction that it should be explored. I do agree with that. In the meantime, like Dolly, I will recall the scent of roses when I look at your photos. I enjoyed this cacophony of spring growth.
