Inside And Out

This morning and the early part of the afternoon

Jackie continued her work on the Brick Path.

My morning task was returning our bedroom to normal now that Nick has finished his clean decorating. This involved shoving the bed back into position; removing many items from the en suite bathroom, having the advantage of allowing me a shower;

returning some to the bedroom and others to become temporary lumber, in the redecorated sitting room. Some of these items will furnish the room while we will have many pictures to cull.

Nick’s work leads these the eye smoothly through these two rooms.

This afternoon, accompanied by my trusty camera, I carried out more dead-heading and pulled up a few weeds. As usual this gallery provides a title to each photograph.

It was only yesterday that I was conversing with Anne of Something Over Tea about our mutual dearth of butterflies, and today we were visited by a solitary Red Admiral.

This evening we all dined on the patio on Papa John’s pizzas with which Jackie and Becky drank Zesty, Ian drank Hoegaarden, and I drank Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2020.

  1. Wonderful gallery of photos of the flowers in the garden. It is enjoyable seeing Jackie firmly ensconced in place and totally comfortable putting the finishing touches on the Brick Path. Nick’s work is looking perfect as the furnishings and decor find their place. Derrick your interior and exterior look so welcoming and comfortable. You and Jackie are truly blessed.

  2. Great work by everyone and lovely photos. Your flowers are stunning. That’s a wonderful butterfly shot. A dearth of butterflies does not sound good.

  3. I’ve always wondered why they are called “Red Admirals”. Who would look at a butterfly and immediately compare it to an admiral, and why ? Red, I can understand!

    1. Thanks a lot, John. Apparently it is a corruption of 18th century Red Admirable. We have a nearby village called Hinton Admiral – so called because it was once Hinton d’Amiral – from the French family who owned it. I meant to thank you recently for correctly naming our Hummingbird hawk moths.

  4. Beautiful work done…inside and out!
Always lovely to be visited by butterflies!
    Ooh…I spotted two owls!

Q: What does a chatty caterpillar become?
    A. A social butterfly. 😀

  5. “Jackie continued her work on the Brick Path” mmmm… ok. LOL! Either she is bored or overcome by the gardens aroma. 😉 I wouldn’t want to do that much weeding. You’re welcome to my garden any day.

Butterflies are in short supply around here. Oh, they breed them at the Butterfly House in Coffs Harbour. It’s a sad fact that much of our wildlife is dwindled down to breeding in encloses. Sigh.

Pizza! A perfect way to finish of a day’s work in the garden.

  6. The inside wears a pleasant and fresh look like the parade of flowers outside. The solitary Red Admiral is quite at home in the garden.

  7. I understand about having many pictures to cull. I always seem to have extra pictures and not enough wall space. Taking them all down and picking out our favorites helps. The flowers are lovely, and I love those arches!

      1. I doubt I ever shall. I prefer solo travel, and that would be irresponsible! So I shall continue to support the local wine industry. ?

  8. Jackie is a hard worker, and her love of flowers and life in general shows. A virtual wander through your gardens was a pleasant and uplifting way to end my day. 🙂

  9. It’s always enjoyable to see spaces refreshed and improved. Your garden and the visiting Admiral are a balm. My personal mantra: less is more indoors, but outdoors… let’s squeeze in one more plant. I know you’ll enjoy all these changes.

  10. Ah-hah! When I left my e-mail and viewed your post on the web, I was delighted to see that your header was exactly what I was going to comment about, Derrick: ” solitary Red Admiral” … yes! What a glorious photo of an amazing butterfly. I love it! Also, happy to see you’re making great headway on the remodel upstairs. Good for you & Jackie!! Have a Happy Father’s Day weekend, my friend. Bob & I send our love to you & Jackie <3 <3

  11. The garden is looking so lovely.
I imagine you will be delighted when everything is back to normal, the storage is sorted and the excess finds a new home.

  12. Lovely flowers, Derrick. Do you know the name of the purple flowers in the middle of the third line from the top. They have a dark strip down the middle of each petal.
