Heucheraholics

After lunch I posted https://derrickjknight.com/2022/06/26/diary-of-a-good-neighbour/

Then Jackie and I visited Jools, Sean, and Pumpkin at

where we engaged in enjoyable conversation, Jackie bought a plant, and I

wandered freely with my camera.

Afterwards we went on a foal hunt.

Donkeys on Bull Hill were the first to oblige.

It was only two days ago that we mentioned that we had never seen any

Shetland foals. Today we spied a few through trees at Norley Wood.

A satisfied crow had more success in catching the thatched hare at East End than the chasing fox ever would.

Before dinner I watched the highlights of the fourth day’s play in the Test match between England and New Zealand.

Afterwards the three of us dined on second helpings of yesterday’s Red Chilli takeaway with the addition of Jackie’ s paneer dish with which she drank Hoegaarden, I finished the Fleurie, and Flo abstained.

  1. We know huecheras as “coral bells” in my area. We had some of the dark maroon ones.

The donkeys seem to be still shedding their winter coats. I always enjoy seeing them and the ponies, especially the Shetlands. Those littlest foals are adorable!

  2. Pumpkin is gorgeous! (I hope I am right and Pumpkin is the doggie!)
Beautiful Heucheras! We call them Coral Bells here, so we are Coral-Bellsaholics! 😉
So glad Jackie found a new plant to adopt!
Love the photo of the colourful stacked little plant-pots photo!
Your foal hunt was very successful! Sweet little foals!
Ha on the bird catching the hare! Wonderful photo!
    (((HUGS))) ❤️

  3. I had no idea what Heucheras were, and even ‘Coral Bells’ didn’t help me out much. They must not be heat-loving, or I think I would have heard of them. For some reason, I assumed the scientific name of the genus was Spanish, but I see it was named after Johann Heinrich von Heucher (1677–1746), a German physician and Professor at Wittenberg University.

    1. Ah you have done your homework ! Heuchera’s come from North America High up in mountains – down to the woodlands in Mexico – They are tough and very heat and cold tolerant . They were indeed discovered and introduced by the german JohannVon Heucher ..

  4. Your title threw me. I thought heucheras were sandals. But I looked it up and they are coral bells, which I love! And so do the hummingbirds. The donkey babies are so cute, napping and knowing mom is looking out for them.

    1. We were a bit late arriving all I could chose in the time, and I still don’t know where to squeeze it in !

    1. It’s straw – on the roof of a thatched cottage at East End – lymington
      Really love that one !

  5. That is a veritable kingdom of heucheras; the photos are quiet a treat. Outside, the ponies and foals are enjoying life to the hilt.

  6. Ha Derrick
What a lovely surprise to see you and Jackie on our nursery!
How nice to actually meet the lady who appears in your blog ( your good wife) and put a name to a face
Of course I already knew what was for supper before reading this as Jackie spilt the beans !
Great to see you both and I’m sure will catch up again soon. Great pics as ever x

  7. love you didn’t have to trample over the moorland and so forth in that wonderful glass houses full of plants, just ready to be snapped by you. And yes surprised Jackie only bought a single pot, unless you were scoping it out for Flo’

  8. Love the neologism heucheraholics. I joined a 12-step program and now only grow one kind, the kind that survived. Like moi.
