Wash Day

This morning, in order to show a positive aspect of the hot weather, Jackie photographed Wash Day at Downton.

She then cut my hair.

After lunch I posted https://derrickjknight.com/2022/08/07/a-knights-tale-147-ten-hours-at-the-wheel/

Later, I carried out a dead-heading session and

photographed a few flowers which bear their titles in the gallery. Bees were quite busy, although the first one was clearly sheltering beneath the zinnia petals. A number of seeds, such as those alongside the deep red backlit petunia, were blown in the air.

While I was uploading these pictures Flo and Dillon set out on a watering and planting session.

This evening we dined on chicken breasts marinaded in Nando’s lemon and lime sauce; Jackie’s savoury rice cooked in my chicken sauce; and tender green beans, with which she drank Hoegaarden, Flo and Dillon drank water, and I drank Signargues Côtes-du-Rhône Villages 2020.

  1. I’ve never seen clothes dried that way! I’m struck by the bokeh effect in many of the photos. (I think that’s what it’s called?) I’m particularly drawn to the single hollyhock and the hydrangea.

  2. I have seen hardly any bees this summer and there are more or less none of those big bees that live in somebody’s hive. The only benes I ‘ve noticed have all been the smallish wild bees.

      1. We have a worrying mite that is affecting bee hives in an adjacent state. We don’t know how much we depend on bees, eh?

With my dinner, i imbibed Barry and Sons Shiraz 2020, from the Clare Valley near Adelaide. ’twas nice.

  3. Wonderful gallery of blooms, Derrick. We liked Jackie’s wash day shots as well. Does the little solar panel on the arch keep the string lights on all night?

  4. I wish I could hang my laundry outdoors — the fragrance is wonderful. I enjoyed your hollyhock photos, too — especially the little bundles of seeds. I used to give those to my dolls as ‘gifts’ when I was a child.

  5. YAY for using the sun to dry the laundry! 🙂
YAY for getting a haircut! (“What do you call a group of men waiting for a haircut? A barbercue. :-D)
    YAY for gardening!
    YAY for busy-buzzy bees!
    (((HUGS))) 🙂
PS…when I was a kid (back in The Dark Ages) we used an old wringer washer to wash our clothes and then we hung them on the clothesline to dry. One of the neighbors had a Great Dane dog who would come over to play with us in our backyard. My mom would get mad when he would run under her newly-washed-damp laundry! HA! 😀 I can hear her now…”Get that dog out from under the clothesline!” 😀

  6. Oh, I love hanging out the laundry. Such a peaceful practice. Your photos are stunning as usual. I think I love the last one the most. With the bee and the flowers in the bottom corner and the lovely background. Just gorgeous.

  7. I love the smell of sun-kissed laundry! Your garden is in great shape considering the heat and dry weather – glad you have water carriers on board.

  8. I had to smile at the makeshift laundry whirligig. Good use of it.
I love hanging washing outdoors and when the line is full I peg the rest to a clothes horse and pop it outside.

      1. Usually it is three or four loads but there was a bunch of bedding to do. I hung it all out on the line and the triple digit temperatures has denim dried in an hour.

  9. Your flowers are gorgeous!! I salute you & Jackie for your amazing gardening skills and you, Derrick, for the wonderful photography skills! I’d like to be there having a glass of Signargues Côtes-du-Rhône Villages 2020 with you!!

  10. It’s getting less common here to dry your washing outdoors, but my laundry room is a tad too small for such an appliance – I use a rack to air things – after they’ve had a turn about on the outdoor rotary line … sometimes they spend days out there, rinsing!
