Ellie

29th August 2022

Early yesterday evening I received a telephone call – mobile to mobile – from Becky.

“Are you in Mum’s car?” she asked. “No”, I replied. Then I explained why not.

“We are following it”, our daughter continued.

As I learned later she and Ian had been on their way to surprise Dillon with birthday presents when they found themselves passing our Modus on the opposite side of a traffic queue at Brockenhurst, and assumed we would be on our way to a celebratory meal. They quickly reversed and slotted in a few cars behind. All was revealed to them at Lyndhurst.

This was that Flo’s time had come and Jackie was driving her and Dillon to Princess Anne’s hospital in Southampton.

Jackie returned home soon after 9 p.m. when we dined on scrambled egg on toast.

Today involved waiting for news. I spent much of it reading ‘Moll Flanders’.

This afternoon I posted https://derrickjknight.com/2022/08/29/a-knights-tale-positive-postscript/

Flo made us great-grandparents at 11 a.m. with the birth of her daughter, Elowen (Ellie).

Becky and Ian arrived here this evening and collected the shawl made by my sister, Jacqueline, and the car seat necessary to transport their granddaughter home.

Meanwhile Jackie and I dined on her sausages in red wine, boiled potatoes, cauliflower, carrots, and runner beans, with which I drank Calvet Prestige Bordeaux 2020.

The family arrived home with a healthy mother and baby at 00.10 hours. Naturally we passed the parcel over drinks.

As will be apparent there has been no time to discuss the many photographs taken by Dillon in his daughter’s first 24 hours, so a selection will need to follow.

  1. Congratulations! Now, you and Jackie are officially Great ! Hope your picture issues have been resolved so you can share the newest addition. Will the new family continue to live with you for the time being?

  2. It sounds like everyone has come through with flying colours. Congratulations to the proud new parents. I hope Ellie enjoys her extended family.

We all look forward to seeing your great granddaughter. I’ll bet she is a little cutie.

  3. Scrambled eggs are nice too. 🙂 I had to laugh out loud when I read “Naturally we passed the parcel over drinks.” Hence Norm wanted a read. Sounds like lots of willing babysitters. Take advantage of it Flo and sleep when you can.

Well done, proud parents, grand parents and greats.

  4. I remain amazed at how quickly they returned home. My new grandchildren at least managed an overnight stay.

You will no doubt remember the days where a ten day stay in hospital was mandatory, then it became 48 hours. Now we’re back to the trend of home births! That would be a definite No from me.

You now have the midwife’s daily visits to look forward to, and frustratingly they never stick to time

    1. Thanks very much, Sue. As you can imagine the ten day stay is a topic in our household, and I am amazed to see such a tiny baby (even at 8lbs 4 oz) at home

      1. Absolutely! It’s a little scary bringing home a new baby at the best of times; I can only imagine how it must feel for new mums who’ve only had a few hours of hospital support.

Flo is fortunate to have you and Jackie by her side.

  5. What lovely news! And a beautiful Cornish name! Welcome to baby Elowen and many congratulations to the proud parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. What a joy to have her in your home, Derrick, very few great-grandparents have that privilege ❤️️ x

  6. Congratulations! It is nice to hear you have lovely addition to your Family!
By the way, Derrick, when you changed theme of your blog my following was destroyed. I was surprised do not to see your daily posts. Only today I realized, something is wrong and fix it. WordPress do not care about this things.

  7. Congratulations on your first great-grandchild, Derrick and Jackie! I trust that both mother and Ellie are well, and will continue bringing joy to your beautiful family.

  8. Derrick, this is fabulous news! And they have quite a little story to go with the day.

Elowen is a gorgeous name, and Ellie is a perfect nick name.

What a bundle of fun you have at your house! It’s so special that Dillon and Flo are there to share these special times with you. Congratulations to you all!

So, baby Ellie was born the day after her dad’s birthday?
