Official Status

This morning Jackie drove me for a short trip into the forest.

Bovines basked among the browning bracken of Bull Hill.

One couple sat talking on the gravel of Tanners Lane beach;

another walked their dogs across it.

With the Isle of Wight and The Needles on the horizon, gentle waters gathered in the regular rock pools;

rippled the twinkling surface of the Solent, lapped the reflecting breakwaters, and darkened their closest pebbles, while

at a higher level charcoal encircled by larger stones remained as evidence of an attempt at a fire, perhaps laid for alfresco cooking the night before.

This white butterfly flitted along the lane until conveniently coming to rest among stones and autumn leaves. Is it a Green Veined White?

This afternoon Jackie drove Flo and Dillon to Lymington Registry Office to give Ellie’s birth its official status.

We dined on Hordle Chinese Take Away’s excellent fare with which Jackie drank Hoegaarden and I drank more of the Monte Plogar.

  1. You started with alluring alliteration before waxing poetic about the beautiful scenery. Glad that Miss Ellie is now official. She still continues to look more aware than most newborns. Hope it indicates she will be very bright.

  2. That couple do not look like they are on the best of terms! If your butterfly wasn’t the size of a large white, then I’d say ‘Yes, it’s a green-veined white’.

  3. I don’t think I’ve seen a Green Veined White butterfly – probably a northern hemisphere butterfly but I do recall the Butterfly Sanctuary had a few waiting to escape their cocoons they had imported for research.

    Monte Plogar – from Spain?

    After I see the surgeon this morning, we’re off to celebrate the next stage of rehabilitation at our favourite Tandoori Indian Restaurant.

    Ellie is a sweetie for sure.

  4. It must be much warmer there than it is here now. This morning we were barely above freezing with the wind chill. Ellie gets prettier and brighter every day. What a perfect little doll!

  5. You know that I enjoy your prose and today’s pictures are a delightful mix. I too think the young couple sitting on the gravel have paused in a serious heart-to-heart which I hope the exercise of walking home will help to resolve.

    1. Thanks very much, Lavinia. We haven’t been to the Isle of Wight for many years. There’s not much of interest there, and the ferries are very expensive – I believe it is termed the most expensive stretch of water in the world.

  6. As always, a pleasant visit to the south of England. I enjoy your walks and car trips. Elli looks like she’s a lively one…and, of course, sooooo cute!

  7. I find it interesting how much we can read into pictures. The couple seems like they are not on good therms. Were they fighting? Or perhaps they just sat down to enjoy the sun and the ocean, maybe they just got bad news, or she might be checking her phone? Maybe they do everything together and have a great relationship so it’s not important for them to hold hands and grin all the time?
