Better Luck Tomorrow

Having spent the morning transferring my stored telephone numbers manually and individually because my older Samsung phone is obsolete and therefore cannot do it automatically, Jackie and I spent much of the afternoon at the Lymington EE offices.

The comparatively easy task was to buy my Chauffeuse a new mobile phone.

Mine was not so easy. The promised transfer from O2 failed. A PAC Code – whatever that is – essential for the process, was given by this supplier I wished to leave yesterday. This afternoon when that number was presented to complete the handover it was rejected.

This meant I was required to telephone O2, which I did. After the usual queuing for an agent, I was told that a new code number would be sent and this could take 10 minutes, an hour, or 24 hours. The agent said she could not say how long because her system wouldn’t allow her to send this information, and someone else would be transmitting it.

I asked her why her system wouldn’t allow it. The answer was that her system was down.

I remained polite but did suggest that someone else should therefore have made the call and that perhaps this would give her an indication of why I wanted to leave her company.

By 7.00 p.m. this evening I had not received the code, but within ten minutes of this conversation I had received 4 identical e-mails saying they hoped I would not decide to leave today.

Before leaving Lymington I bought a USB cable from Peacock Computers, intending to try out the new phone’s camera. I produced a batch of pictures, but couldn’t manage to transfer them to my computer.

Maybe I’ll have better luck tomorrow.

This evening we dined on Jackie’s wholesome cottage pie, crunchy carrots, firm Brussels sprouts, and tender runner beans, with which which the Culinary Queen drank Hoegaarden and I drank more of the Monte Plogar.

  1. I use the Outlook app on my Samsung which synchronizes addresses. I believe you can also do that with Gmail. Tech support can help you with that. Either with Microsoft in the outlook app or with your cell phone carrier. I love my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Did you opt for one of the new fancy folding phones?
You should be able to see the folder with pics on the cell phone when you connect it to the computer. I usually copy and paste them in.

  2. Oh Derrick, how sad that your saga continues – perhaps you reached the end of your Spanish wine as a result! I have just spent the past two hours of load shedding (i.e. NO electricity!!!!!!) reading aloud to my husband and loved every moment. Okay, we have to find fun in even the worst of circumstances 🙂 🙂

  3. Technology can be great and a pain in the bum too, Derrick! I hope that you get the new device set up how you want it soon.

  4. Oh Derrick, what a saga … the digital world of making things “easier” for us has a lot to learn about providing their clients with “good old fashioned service”

  5. Don’t you just love these utility companies? They’re the same everywhere. I hope you didn’t have to many numbers to add. These days, I have around 200 and every time I delete one or two, I find they are just the ones I needed soon after. Thankfully, do have a paper list I can refer to and re-add them. Sad part is, there’s less than 10 family numbers and less than 50 friends. Most have to do with utilities.
Cottage pies sound good. I was just suggesting one to Norm the other night but it was before our vegetable shop. I could do with a bigger garden. 🙂

  6. If I want them for a post, I put my phone photos into Google Photos which I can then access from my computer and download them. Otherwise, if there only one or two, I email them to myself. Good luck with getting your PAC number.

  7. Remaining polite is quite an accomplishment in these situations. After all that unwholesomeness, I’m glad you got to have a wholesome dinner.

  8. I’ve been having similar problems. My updates to my two Mac computers render my color printer and my scanner printer unusable…and I am told they are not planning an update of the printer software to remedy this.. So I have been reduced to a single b&w printer just when all of my illustrations are ready for my new poetry/coloring book for adults of a certain age: “When Old Dames Get Together” But, luckily a friend suggested I try out the scanner/color printer that she could never get to work…and after two days of struggling to learn how to use it and to locate four ink cartridges and a USB cord that would fit it to connect it to my computer, It Works!!!! Yay. So all three problems–hers and mine–are I hope solved. Takes so much time and energy and so much else to do right now as well. So, long story short, I feel your pain…

  9. Well, heavens. I could save a good bit of money by dumping Verizon and going with another carrier, but I know enough of these things — including your stories — to be cautious. At least I do have a paper copy of every number that’s in my phone now. The days of four digit numbers are past, and memory isn’t up to the task!

  10. I don’t even get my new phone because my company sent it via mail and it all ended up in… Well, I don’t know what…
…so I have to make due with a phone not working properly. 🙂

  11. Julia keeps telling me I should uprate my phone. I keep telling her she should lower her expectations. I know what would happen and will avoid it as long as possible. I hope yours gets sorted.

      1. I have a theory that they have a range of settings – the less you complain, the worse your service gets. Start complaining and they start upping the setting. The AA was the same with me – more and more expensive until I told them I was changing, then the offers of cheap membership started . . .

  12. it seems that any changes that involve a brand/company takes forever…doesn’t help our tempers either! Yes they’ve lost their customer, have they learnt anything! Nope…well not on mine or your watch…

  13. This is so frustrating. Funny how they can send the emails to try to get you too stay but not the one they are legally obliged to send so you can leave.
