Gale force winds lashing rain from murky skies into our windows sent me into another lengthy novel, namely Stendhal’s “The Charterhouse of Parma” during the morning. I was then so deeply into it that I ignored the afternoon’s sunshine. It is 46 years since I last read the book, but I am sure I will relish it once more.
Later, I produced a set of Grandfamily photographs in front of the decorated tree from which Flo and Dillon will select their Christmas card. Not wishing to pre-empt their own publication I am not posting them today.
This evening we all dined on Red Chilli’s excellent takeaway fare. My main course was prawn vindaloo with which I drank more of the Fitou.
It sounds like a good day to stay in and read. 🙂
Thanks very much, Merril
I look forward to your review of “The Charterhouse of Parma.” I haven’t heard of this one before.
Thanks very much, Liz
You’re welcome, Derrick.
My sister in Portsmouth did go out and got thoroughly soaked. You made a good decision.
Thanks very much, Tootlepedal
I am glad your power is still on, Derrick and Jackie. Stay safe and warm! I am sure those house repairs you had done earlier are a blessing in weather like this.
You are right, Lavinia. Thank you very much
Another French wine. Sounds nice. French wines are getting expensive over here.
Thanks very much, Chrissy
Reading is a great escape. Hope you enjoy it and will offer up a book review at the appropriate time.
I will. Thanks very much, Pat
You’re welcome. Look forward to the review.
Hi Derrick – I didn’t know about this book, but I looked it up and can see how you would become engrossed. The Kindle version is only 9 cents, so I plan to download it!
Thanks very much, Barbara
I can’t wait for winter now, so that i can read more.
Thanks very much, Sylvie
Reading against the backdrop of rain is a fine combination.
Thanks very much, Anne
I’ve never read it, but his “Le Rouge et Le Noir” was very popular when I was a student (not with me, though!)
I, too, know of it, but have not read it. Thank you very much, John
Sounds like THE day to stay in and get lost in a book. 🙂 It is especially a joy to revisit a book that hasn’t been read for years. I like doing this.
YAY for you being the photographer for The GrandFamily Christmas card!
I’m glad we always did the yearly Christmas photo card/or letter. It is fun to look back and remember the all the kids growth from year to year.
This will be wonderful for Flo, Dillon, and Ellie, too! ❤️❤️❤️
(((HUGS))) ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks very much, Carolyn XX
It sounds as though our weather moved south. Your Sunday weather sounds the same as ours on Saturday, the howling wind was frightening. The garden and lower fields remain flooded.
I’m glad you stayed home in the warmth, driving in such weather is not pleasant.
I hope the photographs turned out well.
The family have a few good choices, Sue. Thanks very much
I read “The Charterhouse of Parma” when I was young!
Thank you very much, Luisa. I have no doubt that you did 🙂
I remember reading it in French, while I was at university
Never read it, Derrick. I’ll have to look into it, thanks.
Thanks very much, GP
Are you reading it in the original? It would be interesting to compare your impression with my having read it in translation, also years ago.
It is a translation, Dolly. This version uses the earlier one by Chatto and Windus and doesn’t credit the translator. Thanks very much
Winter is definitely the time for long long books.
Thank you very much, Elizabeth
It was quite wild here in the East Mids too Derrick.. xx
Thanks very much, Sue XX
I understand it’s been raining heavily for days!
Yes. More again today. Thanks very much, Sheree
Perfect reading weather. I love rereading books after decades. I think it shows how much you have changed, or maybe haven’t changed.
Quite so, Gary. Thanks very much.
A rainy day is a book day 🙂
Thank you very much, Riba
