Woodland, Deer, And Thatching

This morning, before the rain set in later, we bought a replacement Dyson vacuum cleaner at New Milton Electrical Centre, then set off for a forest drive.

It seems hard to believe that the worst of the potholes in Beckley Common Road have been filled in, but many, like these have been left.

Fallen and damaged trees proliferate along Bolderwood Ornamental Drive.

A number of shaggy ponies adorned the landscape at Appleslade,

where Jackie photographed deer on a hillside.

On our way home we diverted to Hockey’s Farmyard Café for lunch,

and afterwards passed the Elm Tree pub with its completed thatching, which Jackie also photographed..

This evening we all dined on Ashley fish, chips, onion rings, mushy peas, and curry sauce augmented by Garner’s pickled onions and Freshona pickled gherkins, with which I finished the Malbec.

  1. The landscapes are beautiful there, even with a gray sky above! Does anyone hunt the deer? Venison is very good meat. That road looks terrible, do you have a road commission that is responsible for the repairs? Our road commissions are county by county.

  2. Oh, Jackie and Derrick! Phab…er…Fab photos!
Love the verdant moss, the dear deer, the shaggy ponies! And thank you for sharing the completed thatched roof…it looks amazing! 🙂
    (((HUGS))) ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
PS… “May the roof overhead be well thatched And those inside be well matched.” – Irish blessing 🙂

  3. Your tree shots are wonderful. The trees are so full of movement. Jackie’s deer on the hillside looks like a painting. I can’t pick a favorite today!

  4. Are the Dyson’s any lighter than they used to be? I’m into the Shark range these days.
Lovely images – deers, ponies and trees, my idea of a morning well spent.

  5. So many wonderful photos! The mossy bulbous tree trunk has an interesting feminine flare. The thatching is beautiful and amazing!

  6. The forest drive is interesting. So much of Nature and my favourite – animals!! I like the names of the roads and places too. Reminds me of old English novels in rural settings. Especially Christie!! Dyson is a good company. We too get their products over here. A little costly though. Hope you are doing well Derrick. I have become inordinately busy post retirement. Can you believe?

    1. Yes. They are quite rare, which is why Jackie took that long distance shot. Thanks very much, Bridget

  7. That thatched roof looks so nice. With all the rain you have, I am not surprised to see so many toppled trees. The ground must be super-saturated. Goodness, you have had a lot of rain.

  8. What a beautiful job of Thatching. I feel like I’m traveling back in time when I look at your photos, Derrick. And how fortunate that the animals are allowed to roam. I hope motorists are good at taking this into account.

  9. Trees in the forest in all stages of life. I always feel a bit of sadness at a fallen giant.

The completed thatched roof is beautiful! It is always a pleasure to see ponies and deer, too. Thank you both for sharing your time out with readers.

  10. Interesting, your deer appear much darker than the deer in my particular area. If there’s a pothole, my car will find it…and then I curse????
