Advent Day 6

I believe these two displays from December 1966 adorned the windows of Selfridges in Oxford Street.

Selfridges is a Grade II listed retail premises on Oxford Street in London. It was designed by Daniel Burnham for Harry Gordon Selfridge, and opened in 1909.[1] Still the headquarters of Selfridge & Co. department stores, with 540,000 square feet (50,000 m2) of selling space,[2] the store is the second largest retail premises in the UK[1] (after Harrods).[2] It was named the world’s best department store in 2010,[3] and again in 2012.[4] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selfridges,_Oxford_Street

These Christmas lights are from Oxford Street and Regent Street in November 2013.

Given the anticipated 80 m.p.h. winds of tomorrow’s Storm Darragh we carried out the photoshoot for Advent Day 7 late this afternoon so that we could maintain our sequence and I can post our trip to Lymington as planned on Day 7.

This evening we dined on cod and parsley and cheese centred haddock fish cakes; mashed potato; carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, and runner beans, with which Jackie drank Diet Coke and I drank more of the Albali.

  1. I love the Christmas images for today. I’m glad you’re staying put tomorrow; so many Christmas markets staying closed , such a shame, terrible stormy weather.

Oh, and I just heard that the first crossword is 100 years old today!

  2. I’ve just got the DVD, relating the Self ridges empire, which we home movie buffs will watch in the fullsome of time.
And yes, I’ve shopped at said store in the layers 60s.

  3. I am enjoying your Advent photos, but 80 mph winds do not sound good to be out in. I hope the storm is not as intense as predicted, and that you and Jackie stay safe.

  4. Strong winds and Christmas decorations are both temporary occurrences … however I hope the decorations are permanent enough to withstand the strong winds …

  5. Those Selfridges windows are wild!
I do hope you’re not too badly affected by the winds. We had strong wind gusts yesterday–maybe 40-50 mph, but twice that is really scary!

  6. Those winds are intense. I’m glad you made your visit before the worst of the storm.

We watched a series about Selfridges a few years back. I’m sure it was fact-based with a healthy dollop of fiction. We really enjoyed the early episodes.
