Bookbinding And Slime

My youngest daughter brought her daughters to visit for a couple of days. The fact that heavy rain fell  all day long, causing delay in their arrival until mid-afternoon did not in any way mar a marvellous afternoon and evening.

Elizabeth introduce the girls to bookbinding. Carefully, clearly, and comprehensively she took her great-nieces through the process of making books. They were instructed in selecting and cutting their paper; folding, binding, and stitching the pierced pages;  decorating the covers and spines; and finally applying the book press. Their Mum lent an occasional hand.

Afterwards, Elizabeth’s tutees reciprocated with a lesson in making slime. At one point there was a spillage of glitter.

This evening we dined on tender roast lamb; sweet and ordinary roast potatoes; cabbage, carrots, cauliflower. The Culinary Queen drank Hoegaarden, whilst the other three adults drank Trivento reserva Malbec 2017. Later, I believe, we will enjoy Jackie’s apple and apricot crumble with custard, cream, or ice cream according to taste.

  1. An unusual but fascinating way to spend such a dispiriting day, Derrick. Such a great pleasure to be able to enjoy one’s grandchildren in happy pursuits – and not a smartphone in sight.

  2. Even stitched pages! They are learning really professional skills, there, and obviously having fun doing it. I don’t think too many households have a book press happening to be hanging about.

  3. This is a pictorial record of a splendidly creative day. In our youth we might have had one or two photos; now we can record the whole day day so simply. Wonderful!

  4. Glorious Derrick, I used to love my crafty indoor days, spending time with my mum, lots of wonderful memories, although she no good with my Meccano Set ….

  5. I escaped the slime this week-end when my great granddaughter visited, she was distracted by a doll she went head over heels over… I DO envy you the beautiful book press…

  6. Looks like the rain came just in time. My money says that the girls are the only ones amongst their peers that learned bookbinding on Sunday.

  7. Oh, what fun! Especially on a rainy day! How wonderful that your beautiful granddaughters learned some new skills and crafts! I’m so glad they got to come and spend time with you and The Gals! Grandkids keep us young! They bring a sparkle and a liveliness of fun into our homes and hearts! 🙂
Glitter is easy to spill-age! HA! 🙂 As a mom, and teacher, I always said, “Glitter, Easter grass, and Christmas tinsel often hide and multiply and we find it in such odd places months later!” 😉 😀
    HUGS!!! 🙂

  8. What a lovely day spent with family in creative pursuits! Your granddaughters are beautiful, and with the glitter, they will have left some sparkle even after they’re gone. (You can never clean up all the glitter.) 🙂

  9. Lovely to see the family working together like this, and book binding of all things – not so easy, yet it looks like they all enjoyed it and made fine work! Wonderful photos Derrick!
