Last night I watched a recording of yesterday’s Rugby World Cup match between Wales and Fiji, and this afternoon that between Argentina and USA.
This morning we took a short drive into the forest.
The leaves of deciduous trees viewed before Sway Tower from South Sway Lane are just trying on autumnal tinges, and some of the field horses now wear their warming rugs in preparation for the colder nights which they have so far been spared.
Known as Peterson’s Folly this iconic edifice is situated on Flexford Lane, on the opposite side of which Judge Peterson built a trial of the building in order to demonstrate the construction capacity of concrete.
The prototype now appears to be a boarded up dovecote
visited by the odd pigeon,
one of which attracted the attention of its white cousin cruising up for
companionable canoodling.
Maybe the dove admiring itself in the conservatory window reflection was considering entering the fray.
While I watched the match Jackie helped Nugget to plant some bulbs.
“Where’s Nugget?” (35).
He allowed her to plant this row of festuca glauca in honour of Mick O’Neill and Bluegrass Parkway.Â
This evening we dined on old gold smoked haddock; creamy mashed potatoes; piquant cauliflower cheese; crunchy bright orange carrots; and tender green runner beans with which Jackie drank Blue Moon and I drank more of the Malbec.
My goodness he’s a handsome fellow! Someone should tell him he’s too rotund to hide side on though. The Sway Tower prototype is pretty ugly, so it’s as well the birds enjoy it – it lacks the finishing topper of twin turrets which I now fully appreciate makes all the difference between a Tower and a tower. Dare I ask how the new printer is going?
You dare. It isn’t. Expert from Peacock Computers coming tomorrow. Many thanks Pauline. Well spotted.
Yes, slightly too rotund to hide behind stems and blade shaped leaves.
Well spotted, Helen
I’m glad the birds love the tower. Otherwise it might look creepy. Nugget is so adorable!
Thanks very much, Luanne. It would look somewhat out of place 🙂
I love the way Nugget has adopted you and Jackie
Thanks very much, Sheree
That tower might work for nesting raptors too.
🙂 Thanks very much, Cindy
When I worked in Washington, D.C., I remember getting dive-bombed by pigeons. They scared me…I’d rather have a close encounter with Nugget! He’s so photogenic!
Thanks a lot, Jill. You’ve seen “The Birds”, I presume?
Oh yes…many times!
🙂
Spotted him! Best of luck with the printer tomorrow!
Thanks very much, Jodie. Well spotted
Peterson’s Folly doesn’t appear to be quite as grand as its 2013 incarnation.
Thanks very much, Liz
That’s some folly. When it rains we have a dove and a pigeon who sit in the alcove next to the front door.
So the pairing is not unusual then, Pauline. Thanks very much
My husband, Mike, recorded those very same Rugby games. He’s a big fan. Nugget is charming and so brilliantly colored. What a handy and charming gardening companion.
Thank you very much, Alys. Saturday’s matches cancelled because of typhoon – so England won’t play
I read your older post. Peterson’s Folly makes an interesting private dwelling. A bit tall for me. 🙂
Good to see little Nugget at work in the garden helping Jackie! 🙂
Thanks very much, Lavinia. Me, too
I can’t remember seeing a white pigeon; they’re really lovely. I spotted Nugget trying to hide behind that tower of a stem — it wasn’t quite wide enough! I finally got my new gizmo to print, copy, and scan, but I haven’t yet figured out photo printing. I’ve set that aside for the time being. I hope your consultants are helpful.
Many thanks, Linda. They usually are very good, but what a pain not to be able to set up our own printers
It’s nice to see birds of different feathers companionably canoodling. I like that phrase, so I looked up canoodling. What a fun word! Great picture of Nugget, too!
Thanks very much, JoAnna
Peterson’s folly lives on, nearly a century and half into the 21st century offering perch to amorous pigeons. Thanks for the introduction.
Many thanks, Uma. And now we find concrete everywhere
Such an attractive Nugget (barely trying to disguise himself behind plants), and how lovely to for the little bird to live daily in paradise. Meanwhile, another delicious dinner I missed out on…but…chicken and dumplings here tonight!
Thanks very much, Cynthia. Chicken and dumplings sounds good.
And it was, twice!
🙂
I love birds and pigeons
Great photos Derrick.
Have a great day
Thanks very much, More
You’re welcome
The “lovebirds” brought a smile to my face, and of Nugget is always a joy to observe. I hope his “assistance” does not hamper Jackie’s efforts too much 🙂
Thanks very much, Takami. He adds about ten minutes to each planting 🙂
Peterson’s Folly – What an interesting read, and thank you for the link to the original.
So sorry to hear the printer is not yet working, fingers are crossed that the engineer will fix it today.
I loved the pair of pigeons, so sweet. And I enjoyed seeing Nugget once again in his element helping Jackie. I spotted him hiding too.
Thanks very much, Sue. Well spotted
That prototype really is ugly and I pity the poor people who live under the residence of the Pigeon Poop Air Force
You are right, John. Many thanks
After he approved the new plants he started playing hide and seek 🙂
🙂 Thanks very much, Ribana
“If i can’t see you, you can’t see me!”
Nice try Nugget. 🙂
(He is so adorable though)
Wonderful avian photography today, Sir. 🙂
Thanks very much, Bob. Well spotted
Only you could spot two “kissing cousins” on the tower, Derrick 🙂
Nugget, as I said the other day, sure is learning how to hide!! I did spot him, but he’s getting sneaky!
Thanks very much, GP 🙂 Well spotted
Nugget has excellent taste when it comes to deciding what Jackie should plant. He’s training her well!
Thanks very much, Sandra 🙂
Found Nugget quick as a wink!
Well spotted, Laurie
Great images, particularly the grey doves and building against the blue. We anthropomorphise animals, do they zoomorphise (?) us?
🙂 Many thanks, Libre
I love the tower.
And, of course, the robins.
Thanks very much, Rabirius
It’s nice of Jackie to help Nugget. 🙂 He’s such a handsome fellow. Those pigeons did look lovey-dovey.
Thanks very much, Merril
Nugget is hard at work. What would you do without him?
A good question, Sylvia 🙂 Thanks very much
?
I knew it. Nugget was angling for the title of Head Gardener … seems like he’s well on his way! 😀
🙂 Thanks very much, Widders
Good to see Nugget! He’s in fine form and being a great supervisor in the garden! 😉
HUGS!!! 🙂
PS…Been a busy-bee weekend for me.
Thanks very much, Carolyn X
I don’t know what to make of Peterson’s Folly Derrick, it has certainly stood the test of time whatever its purpose was, at least the Doves can enjoy its construction and views, not sure I would appreciate it as a view unless it had a symbolic use, maybe even a clock tower.
Interesting post.
Cheers.
Thanks a lot, Ian
Nugget is working hard in the garden, it seems.
Many thanks, Dolly
