Today I spent the morning and the postprandial period with my nose in “Culloden”, until venturing out into the
unaccustomed sizzling heat of the garden where the Weeping birch tree has not recovered from the June heatwave.
For photography I relied upon a certain amount of shade;
and both helpful shadows and glowing backlighting.
Afterwards I dripped indoors and buried my nose once more.
This evening’s dinner consisted of Jackie’s well filled beef and mushroom pie; creamy mashed potato; tender cabbage and cauliflower leaves; crunchy carrots, firm cauliflower, and tasty gravy, with which she drank Grenache/Cinsault Pays d’Oc rosé. From Desperate Dan’s cow pie our discussion turned to the Dundee stable of comics including, Dandy, Beano, Beezer, and Topper, all of which we had delivered, but had to wait for Mum to read first.
The sizzling heat is amply expressed in your photos, Derrick.
I didn’t know that Beano was featured in the comics. Now I know where Terry Pratchett got the name for one of his characters. Is he a clown in the comics?
The comic titles were all words for something good, e.g. Beano – a feast. You may like https://derrickjknight.com/2015/03/22/the-topper-and-the-times/ and https://derrickjknight.com/2014/08/22/her-very-own-seaside/ Thanks very much, Dolly
You are very welcome, Derrick. Thank you for educating me and providing the links to your older and very enjoyable posts.
Thank you very much, Dolly
The pleasure is mine, Derrick.
We are sharing the same weather and the same disinclination to go outdoors any more than required.
Thank you very much, Pat
We are at the start of a heatwave, too. Poor trees and you. I like the shadows and backlighting glow.
I don’t know the comics. 🙂

may be of interest, Merril. Thank you very much
I saw the references to the comics, but it’s the family photos that stand out in these posts.
Thank you so much, Merril. I thought you would appreciate the whole posts.
I did, Derrick. Thank you.
Oh dear, is there anything you can do to support your trees? We have dug little channels to the roots of a few vulnerable trees and inserted a plastic bottle which we supply with water.
We inherited a very poor looking olive tree from a neighbour a few years ago and today it looks great. (Also thanks to Tomorite -great for any living plants) Like the other trees around in North Norfolk, we are enjoying the slightly warmer weather.
Love the sound and the smell of your meal. Cheers!
Thank you so much, Dina. We are hoping our wet August will have rescued them. The leaves of the birch were wind burnt in June
My favorite of this group is “Shadows on orange shed door.”
Thanks very much, Liz.
You’re welcome, Derrick.
We also a hot dinner tonight. Jackie, we must be mad, but planning ahead is good. and Sausage and mash was on my menu for tonight! And lets not forget the use by dates!
While I was sweltering I also made a chilli for tomorrow. Albeit a mild one. In this heat I think I need certifying!
Thanks very much from us both, Sue. Jackie was sweltering in the kitchen
Love the shadows, Derrick! After a taste of autumn temperatures we’re back to hot weather. I’m enjoying it because I know we’ll be freezing soon enough.
Thanks very much, Jill
I imagine it’s a little steamy there!
Just now it is, Luanne. Thanks very much
Hope it gets better soon!
Lovely photos, Derrick, and other UK blogs I follow say the same thing – it’s too hot! Before you know it the heat will be gone.
I think so, John. Thanks very much
Will the weeping birch tree recover? I hope so.
So do we, Chrissy. Thank you very much
I’ve always liked shadows in pictures because they suggest more of a story behind them. You got some good ones today, especially the shadow of the chair and the shadows on the door. It was terribly hot here today too, even after dinner. Keep cool, Derrick!
Thank you very much, Barbara
I hope the weeping birch will eventually recover. The leaf shadows on the orange door is my favorite!
Thanks very much, JoAnna
Your garden still looks lovely despite the heat.
Thanks very much, Arlene
I agree with Arlene, and also that reading is the only sensible thing to do on such a day.
Thanks very much, Sylvie
Here deep in the southern part of the planet, it is cold, wet, and Windy … 1.00 p.m. and we are about to go out and brave this in-hospital spring day
Sorry to read that, Ivor
Spring will bounce back
It just strikes me that a weeping birch tree is perhaps an artificial creation. Or does it exist in nature like the weeping willow?

Thanks very much, John
I am happy to report some very light rain where I live. Your photographs are beautiful.
Thank you so much, Anne. I’m pleased you have some rain
Shadows on the orange door and shadows on the poppy are wonderfully artistic and a joy to look at! My faves today!
Oh, the hot sizzling steamy heat days are tough on everyone and everything. I feel for the people, the animals, the flowers, plants, trees, etc.
Please stay cool and safe!
(((HUGS))) ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much, Carolyn X
I especially like that shed door picture.
Thanks very much, Andrew
Hi Derrick, we also have plants that have been badly effected by heat or hail. They take some time to recover.
Thank you very much, Robbie
Around here we do any outside work very early morning or around dusk. By 10am, it’s unbearable.
Thanks very much, GP. Worse than us, I think
That might be because of the humidity.
Those poor trees appear to be suffering, Derrick. Your captures of the shadows is superb! Our weather has been mild with cool mornings and nights but still hot during the day.
Thank you very much, Eugi
You’re welcome, Derrick.
We are heading into a heat wave after a couple of weeks of very pleasant fall like weather. I don’t like that heat either.
Thanks very much, Elizabeth
We have been very hot here the last week.
So I understand. Thanks very much, Andy
You’re welcome.
I loved your shadow selections.
Thank you very much, Susan
My parents thought that it would be better for us to read The Eagle so we had to buy the Beano or Dandy surreptitiously with our pocket money.
We had the Eagle, too. Thanks very much, Tootlepedal
The photographs are lovely. So enjoyed!
Thank you very much, Holly
Love the shadows!
Thanks very much, Rosaliene
Shade really enhances your photos
Thanks very much, Sheree
You’re very welcome Derrick
Ugh. I know all about sizzling heat so I feel your misery.
Yours is much more sizzling and for longer periods. Thanks very much, Alys.
Lovely play with the shade and light, Derrick. We need to find respite where we can!
Thank you very much, Dale
The gardens still look lovely, Derrick and Jackie. Seems like you had a heat wave while we slid into autumn here.
Thank you very much from us both, Lavinia
It may be hot but the garden is still beautiful!
Thank you very much, Ribana
The photo of the Japanese anemones is a winner!!
Thanks very much, Jan
