Flies Come With The Territory

The red climbing rose ascending the lopped cypress has lagged behind the white Generous Gardener on the opposite side but recently began making up for it.

On another searingly hot day, after a Tesco shopping trip, having succeeded in finding accessible water yesterday, we set off to Mudeford in an attempt to do the same. No such luck. Every car park was fully occupied; other drivers slowly circled around hopefully; each area of grass swarmed with pedestrians.

We therefore fled to the forest, where, wherever we drove, animals clustered together sheltering where they could;

along Bisterne Close;

up Forest Road;

and at Burley Lawn, where cattle had commandeered the favourite spot, accepting the flies that go with it.

A grey pony had no intention of giving up its post in the middle of Burley Street.

Becky and Ian having returned from Southbourne last night made up the full complement for dinner this evening, which included Maple flavoured racks of pork spare ribs; Jackie’s colourful savoury rice; and corn on the cob, with which the Culinary Queen drank Zesty, Ian and Dillon drank Warsteiner, and I drank Trivento Mendoza Reserve Malbec 2021.

  1. I feel so sorry for the poor animals. The sheep seem to tolerate them better than the cattle.
    My problem is keeping them out of the house. Today I managed it by keeping windows open but closing shutters and blinds, and I managed a through breeze.

    Not much longer and they’ll buzz off and die.

  2. Your photographs successfully convey the heat of the day. I am pleased to learn that Becky and Ian have found a place to call their own and look forward to hearing more about it. We saw several members of the Urban Herd on our walk today.

  3. I feel so bad for the animals having to endure those pesky flies! ???? Dinner sounds so delicious, Jackie! I like the words Car Park much better than what we call them, a Parking Lot. ????????????❤️

  4. You have so many flies. Around here, where agriculture is more of a business, insects have taken a real pasting from the farmers and their insecticides.

  5. Hopefully the cooler weather will come soon and the buggy-bug-flies will all fly away to a vacation spot far away from these poor equine and bovine…or they could make friends with some frogs who could deal with the flies! (wink, wink, HA!)
    (((HUGS))) ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  6. Those sleek pony coats will soon become winter furry again and the flies will be gone. That poor cow with all the flies seems very stoic. The Hereford looks like she has something to say in that one photo.

  7. Flies are such pests! I feel sorry for those animals having to endure their pestiness!! I love that red climbing rose … gorgeous photo, Derrick.
