More Unlikely Bedfellows

Shirtsleeves were just about adequate for my post-gale walk around the garden this cooler and brighter morning.

Once again plants, albeit somewhat weatherbeaten, most unlikely to be found together in the flower beds at this time of year are featured. The yellow climbing rose Summer Time, and the ginger lilies should, for example be over by now.

Today’s gallery harbours more plants not recently photographed which bear titles once accessed by a click on any image. I think the butterfly is a Speckled Wood, which we have not seen before in 2023.

Afterwards I made good headway on Nevil Shute’s “On the Beach” which I had begun reading a couple of days ago.

Elizabeth and Jacqueline visited this afternoon and were very impressed with and bought some of Flo’s all natural materials hand made jewellery. They also chatted with Ellie.

I then watched a recording of the rugby World Cup quarter final match between Wales and Argentina.

We then dined on oven fish and chips, onion rings, mushy peas and pickled onions, with which Jackie drank Hoegaarden and I drank Doom Bar.

  1. “Unlikely Bedfellows” is funny. Gorgeous photos. I think the fuchsias are my favorite.

BTW – For the last few days, WordPress isn’t recognizing me on your posts but IS recognizing me on other’s posts. I keep having to sign in and I’m not even sure if it registers my replies or let’s you know it’s me. I am Jodie.

    1. Oh, there I am. I see all looks well on your end. But here I still have to fill in my email and name again to post this. So if your comments have gone down this may be why. Fell free to contact me on facebook if you have any questions as to what I am seeing.

    2. Me too, Jodie, and probably since the recent WordPress updates.
But if I click the text on the Reader instead of clicking VISIT, I can see the post and make my comments without filling in the email bumph.
Alternatively, I can VISIT the post, come out of it and make my comment by clicking the comment icon on the Reader itself.

    3. Thank you very much, Jodie. I am getting your comments, and I am sorry it is co difficult for you – especially after such loyalty fo so long X

  2. Lovely. I think I appreciate flowers more at this time of year, when you know their days are numbered, and the Autumn light makes them appear different, somehow.

    1. I so agree with you, soon I must go and rescue the tender ones, and get them into the greenhouse.

  3. Amazing flowers for the time of year, and nice to hear you can still enjoy the garden in shirt sleeves. When we walked out of the shop at 3.30 this afternoon (we knocked off early) it felt almost hot. It’s nice, even though it’s a sign we are destroying the planet. 🙂

  4. It is good to see that so many plants have survived your rough weather. And the fact that they were so nicely captured by your camera adds considerably to the pleasure.

    1. Thank you so much, Uma. Carolyn on doesitevenmatter3 has added a quotation to her comment which makes your point

  5. Looks like a very aged Speckled Wood butterfly. He/she has had a battering. Norm’s read Nevil Shute’s “On the Beach”. He liked “Red Kangaroo” too. I haven’t read either. The jewellery sounds interesting.

  6. Yes, it is a Speckled Wood. When we first holidayed in West Cornwall, I had never seen one before, but presumably with global warming, they have now spread as far north, at least, as our garden in Nottingham.

  7. You have an amazing amount of blooms for the time of year.
My flowers are in pots, and I too am surprised to see they are still brightening my days.

  8. YAY for a walk around the garden to commune with nature and to capture beautiful portraits.
It’s lovely to see the flowers in all of their seasons.
Oh, the butterfly with extra “eyes” on his wings is a beauty!

  9. Lovely flower photos, Derrick. I can almost smell them! Like JoAnna, I am partial to the purple clematis pair… but that Speckled Wood was fun to behold and I enjoyed your readers’ comments and quotes about it.

  10. Your flowers are so lovely, Derrick. Looking out my window, I see autumn leaves in full color, and it’s quite chilly here. It’s sweater and sweatshirt weather for me.

  11. It sounds like a lovely Saturday. Your garden still looks full of color.
I think On the Beach terrified me, as part of the generation that had duck and cover drills in elementary school.

    1. I will, indeed. She doesn’t want me to do that yet. It is wonderful work, Lavinia. Thank you very much
