A Collection Cull

With close to 58,000 photographs in my iMac Photo collection, and thousands more in colour slides and negative format from 1942 to 2012, today I grasped the nettle and began a long overdue cull.

Survivors include me in 1942 and my Dad and me in 1943 produced by my maternal grandfather in Leicester where I was born;

this was taken by a crane driver with whom I conversed in Soho Square Gardens, featured in: https://derrickjknight.com/2012/10/17/meandering-through-soho/

Sam, Holly, Malachi and Orlaith visited us at Minstead on https://derrickjknight.com/2013/03/13/a-hunting-we-will-go/ One of the pictures on that post was produced by Malachi;

I wasn’t quite so high up when I photographed this scene outside Waterloo Station. It is contained in

The total of my digital images has been reduced to 57,343, but perhaps that is enough links for now for anyone who wishes to delve into the archives.

Meanwhile Jackie is continuing with her cull of the shrubs on the Front Drive.

Later, I began reading ‘The Heart of the Family’ by Elizabeth Goudge.

This evening we enjoyed the second shepherd’s pie Jackie had made yesterday, with similar vegetables.

  1. You have so many interesting photos today, Derrick, thanks for sharing these! I hope you get all of your photos stored so you don’t lose them. I have a flash drive loaded up with tons of my photography that is meant for my family.

  2. I’ve recently had great success at decluttering items from our home. But I didn’t touch our photographs — I left those for Richard — way too difficult of a task for me. The photos that you shared here are excellent.

  3. Those are beautiful photographs you have featured today. Somehow there is the same look around the eyes and the mouth of the child Derrick! Culling photographs is going to be an emotional journey.

  4. Every now and then, I take on the task of going through various picture files … and get ‘lost’ in the memories they generate. Culling isn’t as easy as it may sound.

  5. One’s journey through life is a rich tapestry of memories, daily interactions woven into the fabric of our own lives. What a wonderful set of photos and posts, Derrick!

    I have trouble culling photos, even some of the blurry ones. 🙂

  6. What beautiful photos. I’ve been making a little list in my downtime waiting for our dumpster rental of things we need to get rid of, and photos will never be on that list. This post is the exact reason why, they just bring a certain… feeling when you look at photos of the past. Thanks for sharing.

  7. What a lovely trip down Memory Lane. I followed all the links and enjoyed reading each one. “I’ve never even been to your house!” 😂

  8. It is such a time-consuming task. 58,000 – wow. I would be daunted by that task. Instead, I joined Jackie with the landscaping culling. Last Autumn, Pedro and I hired the marvelous Subcomandante, whose name was actually Marcos, like the real life Subcomandate Marcos. Anyway, the Subcomandante brought in 3 guys and the four of them did our entire property in a single day and left not a stray leaf or twig and everything looked beautiful. This year, I am plodding along on my own, a few hours at a time, with my gardening seat (as I see Jackie has as well). It’s less expensive, but oof, what a task. Still, I’d rather be outside getting dirty in the garden than culling 58,000 digital photos. 🙂

    1. Two women who think alike, Crystal. It has taken a period when I can’t do much else to get me started. Thank you very much.
