Robin In Attendance

Jackie and I put in gardening stints early on another warm and sunny day, while Martin continued throughout the day.

Continuing my war with velcro-stemmed sticky Willy, I weeded and dead-headed a little.

Martin came to us on the recommendation of Jackie’s sister Helen. One of the last jobs he carried out for her included extracting a clump of geraniums from her front wall. She gave this clump to Jackie. Today

the Head Gardener separated this into individual plants and positioned them in the soil around the patio border – one can be seen at bottom left of the first two pictures in this gallery.

Accompanied by a pair of Nugget’s progeny

our gardening friend spent the day clearing and tidying more of the Rose Garden. Where’s Martin? (4) is the subject of the first in this gallery.

Here we have pink Festive Jewel with white Madame Alfred CarriĆØre; magenta Roserie de l’Haie with yellow Laura Ford; white Winchester Cathedral; pink Schoolgirl before a yellow climber; pink Shropshire Lad beside Gloriana; peach Crown Princess Margareta; red thornless Zephirine Drouhin; a close up of Roserie de l’Haie; and bright red Altissimo.

This evening we all dined on succulent pork and apple sausages and creamy mash; flavoursome carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprouts, and tasty gravy with which Jackie drank Hoegaarden and I finished the Bardolino.

  1. I was looking at the pictures before reading and totally missed Martin. Then, when I read the post I had to go back and see what I missed.

So sweet to think of Nugget living on in his descendants. What lovely little birds.

Your roses are spectacular. LOVE the names!

  2. The garden is looking great, guys! Dinner sounds delicious as always, Jackie. ā¤ļøā˜ŗļø????????

    1. Thanks very much, Sherry. Yes – that is what draws them. Martin has robin followers wherever he gardens

  3. It’s always a pleasure to see Nugget’s progeny. I love our American robins, but yours are just as pleasing, and perhaps even cuter. Do yours sing on a regular basis? Robin song is one of the summer pleasures here.

    1. They do – especially when establishing territory. Thanks very much, Linda

  4. So many lovely flowers! The photos of Nugget’s prodigy are beautiful. It’s nice to see smiling Jackie surrounded by owls and the companion pig.

  5. I have a family of American robins that live near me. Each night a robin perches at the top of my thornless locust tree and sings to establish his territory. Across the gathering gloom I hear other robins singing back to him. The best time of the night!!

    1. I’ll bet. Their war dries are so melodious, if they are anything like ours. Thanks very much, Marilyn

  6. You don’t need fancy foreign cooking. There’s nothing better than “sausages and creamy mash”, preferably with a knob of butter and a smidgin of tomato sauce.

  7. I spied Martin…by his leg! What a great worker he is!
    Crown Princess Margareta is gorgeous!
So sweet to see the little robins joining in the garden love!
I see Jackie is being watched over by a parliament of owls! Hoot who!

  8. Where’s Martin? I ask that question everyday as I totter about on creaky knees while getting the garden ready for the season. šŸ˜‰ Wonderful to see another Nugget. Little buddy.

  9. My goodness your roses are gorgeous! I love the pics of Nugget’s progeny, the first shows off that lovely red chest, and the black and white made me smile with the uplifted foot. Overall, I would say a nice day in the garden for all of you.
