Our Joint One Good Knee

Last night I watched a recording of Saturday’s breathtaking rugby match between Wales and South Africa; after lunch today the soporific contest between Scotland and Argentina.
Bright sunshine had taken me into the rather cold garden this morning.

Winter pansies and trailing ivy adorn hanging baskets on the sitting room walls.

Geraniums

and Japanese maples brighten several vistas.

Surprises include lingering snapdragons

and nascent honeysuckle.

Ubiquitous flamboyant fuchsias continue to flounce among the beds.

Clematises needing warmer weather have died back from the gazebo, but the Cirrhosa Freckles will enliven their support right through until spring.

Carpet roses, like this one in the Weeping Birch Bed, pile on the blooms.

Serpentine stemmed bobbles of Japanese anemones cavort before a spider web in the Rose Garden.

A few crinkly leaves are still to fall from the copper beach;

the Weeping Birch has shed all hers.

Being possessed of our one joint good knee, it fell upon Jackie to fit a new toilet seat in the print room.

This evening we dined on Jackies’s splendid lamb jalfrezi with savoury rice followed by profiteroles. My wife drank Hoegaarden; sister Elizabeth drank Hop House lager; and I drank Tesco’s finest Médoc 2016.

  1. The photos brightened my day, Derrick. I can tell you had fun with your comments, too.
The sky is weeping copiously here–quite distraught. It is fortunate that there is one good knee at least!

  2. Derrick,
Your gardens are still look quite lovely despite the coolder weather there. I particularly like the hanging baskwy in your first photo.

Jackie is quite handy she us a “Jack of All Trades!”
Been a bit uncomfortable the last 3 days. Been in alot of pain from my recent surgery, so trying to rest.

  4. Today the Reader app kept crashing as I waded through your winter-laden garden. Perhaps the technical folks at WordPress need to fix a knee somewhere!

  5. I couldn’t unblock a drain the other day just because I can’t kneel down. You are obviously very keen on rugby, Derrick. Have you ever thought of writing about the players you used to idolise when you were first introduced to the game?

    1. Thanks a lot John. I’ve got my work cut out with what I am doing at the moment, and couldn’t rely on my memory from all those years ago. I do remember that an older boy at school in the ’50s, Joe McPartlin, had one game in the Centre for Scotland.

  6. Lovely photos of a still lovely Autumn garden. Oh to have in-ground Fuchsias out in the open sunlight. Never happen here sadly! My tiny little single bud red carpet rose i posted late October has turned into a 14 inch ‘monster’ with around 15 blooms/buds, but the weather has been exceptionally mild here to date.

  7. The lingering snapdragons make me smile! And I love the fuchsias always! 🙂
The flowers and plants in your garden are so hearty and heavenly today!
I am so glad Jackie could get the new seat on! No one wants a seatless toilet! 😮 😀
HUGS to you and Jackie!!! Continued prayers for our Mum!

  8. Oh, your garden is still so lovely! We’ve had several hard frosts already so we’re looking quite bleak outside. I loved the title – once I figured it out. Mostly I loved that Jackie can not only fix a toilet, but that she’s good enough sport to let you photograph her at the job. Excellent.

  9. Delightful photos and descriptions. You garden is so exciting with all the flouncing and cavorting. 🙂 I really like the spider web.

  10. Well done to Jackie… 🙂 and it is no mean feat getting down, and worst still getting back up… I hope your new knee joint in Jan goes to plan Derrick.. And love that you still have loads of colour in your garden.. I am always thankful for Winter Pansies.. 🙂

  11. Well done, Jackie! Working in little rooms like your print room and our downstairs shower room and WC are very difficult when your knees don’t work well. Such lovely flowers so late in the season!
