Almost two centuries ago several prominent people sat up all night reading ‘The Woman in White’ by Wilkie Collins. I know how they felt because I couldn’t put it down this afternoon – until it came to the final televised highlights of the England/New Zealand Test Match, after which we dined on Becky’s marvellous vegetable bake in a tasty cheese sauce served with Tesco’s meaty Sticky Asian inspired pork belly with which she drank Chenin Blanc; Jackie and Ian drank Hoegaarden, Flo drank a mixed fruit juice and I drank more of the Durif Shiraz.
Nice way to spend a Sunday.

Sounds like a good day, though I’m not a great fan of Wilkie Collins. I am a fan of cheesy vegetable bake and sticky pork belly. And Joe Root. Also saw a few rugby highlights, which cheered me up too.

I was pretty surprised to see the result of that Test Match on Ceefax. What a pity though, that both of those New Zealanders didn’t get a well deserved century.

I listened to commentary on Grimsby Town v Solihull Moors ( An odd name don’t you think?) Grimsby won 2-1 and return to the Football League.

Well, it’s different strokes time. I purchased The Woman in White on the recommendation of a few friends, and started it four times. Each time, my eyes glazed over and I just couldn’t go on. Eventually, I gave my copy to our library, which was delighted to have another copy available.

One of the most wonderful things in the world is to read a book that’s so gripping you can’t put it down. That’s how I’m feeling about the Slow Horses series by Mick Herron. Wonderful writing, vivid characters, cracking plots. Who could ask for anything more?
