In the olden days before I.T. computers and mobile phones families spending an afternoon indoors amused themselves with such materials and activities as were available, each enjoying the pleasure of their individual pursuits in company, either silent or conversing in the same room. So it was with us today when we all wished to take it easy.
Jackie occupied herself with Codeword Crosswords;
Becky took up the knitting done under her tutelage by Flo
who worked on the construction of a wooden owl Santa brought her Grannie.
I continued reading Bleak House.
This evening we dined on Jackie and Becky’s omelette-topped savoury rice with tempura and salt and pepper prawn preparations. The Culinary Queen drank Hoegaarden while Becky and I drank Tulga Joven 2019
I think humans would be better off in some ways without technology. Social media is a brain drain just as video games are. How about families eating dinner together again around the table?
We always eat dinner round the table, John. Thanks very much
I insist on us eating at least one meal round the table together each day.
This type of take it easy day with family is so relaxing and enjoyable.
Thank you so much, Liz
You’re welcome, Derrick.
It looks like a very relaxing day!
Thanks very much, Merril. It was needed
Did you turn your hand to knitting Derrick?
I did. When I was ten. Endless scarves with my own fair isle patterns. Thanks very much, Andrew
Sounds complicated. I once knitted a blue and white Leicester City scarf but that was a long time ago.

I still am not very good at them, but I enjoy crosswords for relaxing times. I also sew a little.
Thank you very much, Rose
OH! All wonderful activities! 🙂 ‘Tis relaxing just looking at the photos! 🙂 We do the same things at our home…just the two of us…and then when all the kids and grandkids are with us we play table games/board games, take walks, play at the park, look at photo albums, work jigsaw puzzles, ETC., and all the while we chatter and laugh. 🙂 I’m so excited about seeing the wooden owl! I love owls! 🦉(((HUGS))) 🙂
Thanks very much, Carolyn X
That looks a very slimline Bleak House! It was 800+ pages in paperback, and every one had to be fought for!
The paper is thin enough, John. Thanks very much
What a peaceful afternoon.
Thank you very much, Sue
What a delightful time. These days my escape it into wordle. https://www.nytimes.com/games/wordle/index.html
If you haven’t tried it, you might like it or not.
We do it every day, John. Thank you very much
And globle and worldle???
🙂
Loving Wordle!
Me, too
A vision of domestic bliss.
Thank you very much, Tootlepedal
I loved this post, Derrick. I do miss the olden days. Great photos!
Thank you very much, Jill
thank you for reminding us. .of the pleasures of “craft” “creativity” virtual hugs
Thank you so much, Q
Thank you for this reminder of the simple pleasure of a quiet afternoon and how we can work on different projects with a sense of togetherness.
You got it, JoAnna. Thank you very much
Those are lively portraits that have captured the subjects soulfully. We have had a surfeit of connectivity that may have altered our sociability in evolutionary ways.
Agreed, Uma. Thank you very much
We still have game night in our house and also card nights with friends. I love it!
Thank you very much, Bridget
What a simple, wonderful way to spend the afternoon! I love how everyone was doing something different and creative.
Thank you very much, Laurie
Sometimes a spot of peace and quiet provides a much needed reboot.
Thanks very much, Sheree
This post ‘speaks’ to me for I enjoy reading / crosswords / knitting once I feel ‘entitled’ to relax.
I’m pleased, Anne. Thank you very much
Sometimes, like today with both my desk top computer and Surface Pro in for repairs, crosswords, feeding the wild birds and a bit of gardening was an appreciated change for a Friday… Until I was told the desk top would be four weeks at least and the Surface Pro has a dead battery and would take two weeks for a new one. So, Norm bought a $400 cheap laptop for both us to use as a back up. Sigh… Computers. Can’t live without them for very long. 🙂 I’m pleased your day was relaxing.
Thanks a lot, Chrissy. Good move by Norm
Sounds like a nice quiet day with some good food at the finish!
Thanks a lot, Barbara
Looks like wonderful hobbies you all enjoy.
Thank you very much, Mrs W
Your welcome.
A beautiful post, Derrick. I miss that part of the olden days, too!
Thank you very much, Lavinia
HI Derrick, this looks like a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
Thanks very much, Robbie
Lovely photo of a cozy family day, but where are the illustrations to Bleak House?
Coming, Dolly. Thanks very much
You are very welcome, Derrick.
We should all spend more days like this ☺️
Just what I was thinking, Ribana. Thanks very much
Simpler times were most enjoyable, Derrick. Family gatherings without shiny screens are much more personal and relaxing, IMO.
Thanks very much, Eugi
You’re welcome, Derrick.
Looks like a wonderful day!
It was. Thanks very much, Jodie

We had a relaxed Saturday, too, Derrick. I went out to help the residents at our nursing home with their Bingo activity – – – and then picked up our mail at the P.O. Guess what was there? Our beautiful enlarged photograph! Thank you so much! Monday I will take it to the gallery to have it framed and will take a picture to show you once it is in its spot of honor in the house. Bless you!
I’m so pleased you got it, Jan. Thank you for your comments. X
I love spending days like that, do Soduko and crosswords too!
Thanks very much, Aletta
We used to play family board games… like Cluedo, Monopoly, Risk, Snakes and Ladders, and Ludo.
Such innocent, gentle fun.
We always received a joint family present from Father Christmas each year: a new and exciting game!
Charades and card games were played too.
Happy days.
x
Thanks a lot, Melanie X
We have what looks like the exact same wooden owl on our mantelpiece. But be warned, any time we handle it, it seems to shed a feather.
Glue has been applied, Pat. Thanks very much
Great afternoon and FINALLY, you’re in a photo. Wonderful.
Thanks very much, Steve
We had a piano, which gave it a work out most evenings. And there was the radio with spoken serials that filled in gaps…weekend mornings a children’s program.
Thanks very much, Catherine
