Roofing Port St Charles

This afternoon I scanned the last of the colour slides from our Barbados trip of March 2004.

Bird unknown 3.04

I cannot identify the owner of the avian eye apparently fixed on me from the Port St Charles shrubbery, whilst mine were observing a team of roofers putting finishing touches to the luxury apartments of this rich person’s playground.

They certainly needed their varied headwear which presumably offered some kind of protection from the strong, hazy, sun, scorchingly hot despite the occasional clouds.

These are the last of the slides, but we have not seen the last of the island, because I have found some negatives from the beginning of the trip, when we were waiting for Sam’s arrival.

Chicken and Mushroom PieLemon chicken supremeThis being the 48th anniversary of our original wedding, we celebrated with a meal out at The Smugglers Inn at Milford on Sea. My choice was excellent chicken and vegetable pie with chips and more veg., followed by the softest bread and butter pudding and custard that I have ever tasted. Jackie chose lemon chicken supreme, with superb chocolate fudge cake and ice cream. Our drinks were Doom Bar and Peroni respectively.

The service was most friendly, and we were early enough to make our escape whilst the quiz night was being set up and the contestants filling up all the tables around us.

Pub food has undergone a considerable transformation since 1968.

P.S. arlingwoman, in her comment below, has identified the pigeon. Thanks to her.

  1. 48? Are you your own typo? Some sort of arranged marriage between pre foetal microbes? Shurley some mistake? But assuming you are but a bulge in the space time continuum pushing through from 1998 and really are celebrating the Invincibles Ashes winning year, congrats to you both.

  2. I do [ha,ha!] so love your love story! Congratulations again and again. That bird looks almost like our Kereru [native wood pigeon] except the beak is maybe a trifle longer and more hooked – so I’m quite interested in it too.

  3. Congrats on the 48th anniversary of your original wedding. I have to admit I’m somewhat puzzled by your wording, Derrick. I’m glad that’s not me dancing around on the roof. 🙂

  4. Congratulations on 48 years of marriage! I read the link you provided for Sylvia. Wow! I’d have to keep that family tree in my pocket at all times in order to keep up, Derrick. I’m sorry for the loss of your first wife. You did good getting back with Jackie! Cheers!

  5. Those guys sure know how to tie a “do rag.” Congrats on the rediscovery and continued kindling of love. My guess on the bird is like yours and others’–some sort of pigeon. Lovely though.

    1. Many thanks, Lisa. I just loved that young fellow’s whole outfit. Incidentally that’s what my analog Canon could do. I was a very long way from the scene, using a 300 zoom

  6. Congratulations on finding your love again. (Thank you for sharing the link about your family tree in the comment.)
I enjoyed the bird’s eye view, as well as the other photos.

  7. Happy 48 years Celebration of marriage to you and Jackie! 🙂 ♡♡
I liked the “avian eye” and think his red eye liber is quite the new fad now! 😉
The roofing project made beautiful photographs which capture an amazing way of construction (at least, it seemed unique to me!)
Pub food here in the U.S. has good selections but not as many vegetables. I liked the way Jackie’s meal looked and your dessert. My Mom used to make a delicious delicate custard and bread pudding with a buttery, smooth inside with caramel (or brown sugar) crust when baked.

      1. Red eye liner is how I was describing the eye of the fancy pigeon. I also am happy to hear my Mom would approve of your dessert. ♡

  8. Congratulations to you and Jackie. I find the thing about wonderful roller coaster rides is to try and not get flung out! Wondrous indeed! And a season of growth and gardening ahead.

  9. As we might say in the U.S., it’s complicated. Thank you very much for providing the family tree. It did clear up the confusion. Life is indeed a roller coaster. Death and loss take their toll. But congrats, congrats on your anniversary! From across the pond, it looks to me as though you and Jackie have a creative, meaningful life full of lovely small things.

    1. I’m so glad that someone’s come up with a better name than scaly-naped! Apart from the fact that only birdwatchers ever have call to use the word “nape”, scaly makes it sound diseased!

  10. If you wrote your life as a novel nobody would believe the ending! Congratulations on the anniversary. Meanwhile the Scaley-naped pigeon seems to have been last in the queue when the names were being handed out…
