I spent a couple of hours this afternoon reading “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”, and, as yet, like its author, I have not finished it. I will feature it when I do.
Later, we drove into the forest where
Jackie parked beside Ran’s wood and I rambled with my camera.
A febrile squirrel periodically caught my eye.
While I concentrated on nearby chickens at Beaulieu Jackie focussed on distant egrets.
Fawley Power Station’s lesser impact on the horizon is to disappear when it has been demolished for housing development. It is represented by the unlit tower to the far right of the broader view. The Refinery pictured here continues, and is the largest in Europe.
This evening we dined on Jackie’s toothsome sausage casserole; creamy mashed potatoes; firm carrots and broccoli; and tender runner beans, with which she drank Hoegaarden and I drank 2107 Corbieres.
You make Jackie’s cuisine sound so delicious. Glad that unsightly power station will vanish from your view. What will replace it to provide power?
I have no idea, Judy. Actually it is some way from us. Thanks very much.
It’s a shame to see so many apples going to waste. I don’t know which will destroy that skyline more, the smoke stacks or the housing development! There goes the countryside!
Yep. Thanks very much, GP.
I thought the fallen branches were some sort of alien creature at first. π
I agree…an animal sculpture
That’s good
As I hoped. Thanks very much, Merril
Cool. I thought it was just my (very) overactive imagination. π
Looks like you had another wonderful day.
Thanks very much, Mrs W. The weather was much better than forecast
It’s cold and dreary here with a heavy mist. Unfortunately because of COVID19 I had sit out of the plant in the cold for 2 hours. Luckily Wrangler has a big rain coat in the truck and I have layers.
That was rough
It was.
Is the refinery still at Fawley? My dad worked for Union Carbide who took cracked oil from the refinery and made various products with it which he sold; I even had a summer job there in 1977.
The refinery is still there – Power Station to go. Thanks a lot, Geoff
I have now amended the text because my pictures are almost entirely of the refinery. The Power Sation buildings are unlit. Thanks for alerting me Geoff.
‘Looks’ like the demolition of the power station could be a good thing, but time will tell……
I’ve amended the text here, Ivor. My photos are largely of the refinery which is continuing. Thanks very much.
You certainly can’t help noting the refinery. I sometimes think of such places when people complain about the intrusions of wind farms on the countryside.
Thanks a lot, Tootlepedal.
The light in the refinery photos gives them a very eerie feeling reminiscent of a doom’s day movie.
Thanks very much, Liz. Jackie saw the potential.
You’re welcome, Derrick. Jackie has a good eye.
π She does
π
The Power Station IS unsightly, but your photos of it are really striking and beautiful, Derrick.
And that image of the little squirrel is ‘Autumn’ in a nutshell π
…More leaf and acorn raking for me tomorrow!
Thanks very much, Emma. “Autumn in a nutshell” I like. Happy raking.
Definitely has its own unique beauty. Wonderful photos.
Thanks very much, Gary
There’s so much to see in a forest and within your photos of branches. I love the pale yellow – gold bracken.
Thank you so much, JoAnna. You are one reason why I am focussing more on the trees.
I am honored and grateful to be one reason, Derrick. I think Parul forgot our last Thursday Tree Love post, but there’s more tree love coming soon.
Very interesting black and white of the broken tree, Derrick.
π I’m pleased. Thanks very much, Dolly.
The pleasure is mine, Derrick.
The forest is very beautiful. Reminds me a little of the woods behind our house.
Thanks very much, Laurie
Those chimneys are beautifully lit, as are the fruits and sections of greenery in the woods, and present a pleasant contrast to the darker parts of the images. The planned housing project is going to be uncomfortably close to the refinery!
I have felt sad about unfinished businesses of the departed authors, add to that scandalous efforts of enterprising publication houses, and of those left in charge of the estate.
Thank you very much, Uma. The proximity to the refinery is a very good point. Already house prices in the area near the refinery are so much cheaper than elsewhere.
Looks like a beautiful autumn day in the forest. That squirrel almost looks like he is playing a flute! π
That black & white of the broken tree is very artistic.
Thanks you so much, Lavinia – especially for these particular observations. I was too far away from the squirrel to see its flute π
Wow the horizon will change
And can you DJ me a favor ?
Will you let me kjwnwhen you finish the book and review it – just in case I am not online and I miss the post?
Thanks very much, Yvette. I certainly will.
π
Your b/w photograph of the tree stump looks very striking. It isn’t very far from being a monster from a sci-fi film.
Thanks a lot, John. That is how it seemed to me
Oh, I love trees! And you know how to capture them so beautifully in all their seasons/stages of life! π
The tree stump looks like an animal to me…long nose, big eye, lumbering limbs. π
So lovely to see the squirrel, the chickens, and the egrets! All seem to be enjoying their fact-to-the-camera photos! π
(((HUGS))) π
PS…I look forward to your review of Mr. Drood, Mr. Knight! π
Thank you very much, Carolyn. I’m pleased you saw the tree stump as I did. X
Lovely woods.
Thanks very much, Rupali
I rather like the industrial landscape. Reminds me of Immingham near me.
Thanks a lot, Andrew
I always love to see the egrets. I specially like the white ones. Your forest photographs are beautiful, Derrick.
Thank you very much, Jill
Als ik het niet dacht: Hij rijdt het bos weer in … Niks aan de hand! Nog een jonge God! Helemaal opgeknapt … How do I say it in English? Eventjes een pas op de plaats, dacht ik … Nee, dringt niet tot hem door. Sterker nog! Hij leest het niet eens en struint weer door het bos, over de brug en nog een kilometer en weer terug over de snelweg, hoor …

Heel erg bedankt, Frieda
I like the photos of the refinery, I do not find them ugly in the slightest. I like the contrast.
By the way, have you become a time traveller? 2107 Corbieres!
Well spotted, Sue. I think I’ll leave it, just for run π Thanks very much.
That squirrel is so cute ππ
Super delicious dinner π₯ π
Many thanks, Ribana
Nice forests in your neighborhood. π
Thanks a lot, Cynthia. Not really a patch on yours π
I would enjoy a saunter there, I am sure!
I think you would, Cynthia. Thank you very much.
