Not Summer

Although the rain largely kept away today, the weather remained unseasonably cold and overcast as, after purchasing provisions at Ferndene Farm Shop, Jackie and I took a brief drive along Holmsley Passage and back.

Cyclists and dog walkers travelled along the disused railway track; walkers and ponies graced the moorland; and one runner jogged down the hill.

Ponies in particular foraged unconcerned with what went on around them, where

heather purpled the landscape despite the

glowering skies silhouetting the tree line.

The almost dried up stream beneath the road once more ripples, flows, and nurtures weeds.

On Burley Road a pony defied the traffic to encroach upon its companion foal.

Whatever the season is it is definitely not summer.

This evening we all dined on Jackie’ s fusilli pasta bake containing bacon, boiled eggs, and various vegetables, accompanied by baked gammon, with which she drank more os the rosé and I drank La Vieille Ferme vin rouge, 2021.

  1. The gray sky is depressing, isn’t it? That gray is one big reason why I stayed in Las Vegas, Derrick. We have 300+ days per year of sunshine! I suppose the drivers have to wait for the ponies to get off the road rather than try move them off.

  2. We had a similar day though the sun has decided to venture out just as I am getting ready to leave work. My coworker is happy as he has a cocktail with friends on a terrasse!

  3. I imagine having a break from the summer heat would be a good thing. Our temps here have dropped from the 90s to the 80s – a welcome relief. The heather is beautiful. It’s always nice to see ponies.

  4. Our temperatures have finally dropped into the high eighties. It has been miserably hot for the last two weeks, and not a drop of rain. The weather man tells us that tonight we are getting showers. But, they have been saying that for several days now. 😉
I am glad your weather has improved. The ponies look like they are enjoying the weather and the foliage.

  5. A lovely walk for you both and the heather reminds me of the Yorkshire moors and the foal is so sweet. Oh, don’t get me started on the weather this summer! Already feels like autumn – But at least the skies are dramatic!

  6. Oh, I love the purpled heathered landscape! Gorgeous! Love the ripples-photos, too!
We had a very cool and super pleasant June! Then July was hot hot HOT! We shall see what August has in store for us.
I like your moody-diva-y skies! That’s some attitude! HA! I always try to make sure the moody-weather days don’t dampen my spirits! Dampen…Ha! 🙂
    (((HUGS))) ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  7. Beautiful nature shots of ponies and heather. I imagine it’s depressing to keep seeing that grey sky, but I think I’d rather that than extreme heat. We are in a patch of cool mornings and warm sunny days, but soon the humidity is going to return.

  8. Those gray skies may be depressing, but it’s better than the American heat wave.
    Thanks for the pony pictures!!

  9. I have to tell you – I love the coolness of an overcast day. And photos are so much richer taken in that kind of light. I love the purple of the heathers!

We’ve had an unusually benevolent summer here in the Pacific NW – almost like the old days when temperatures were more moderate. Counting our blessings on that – we’ve been lucky this year.

  10. I read this yesterday but goodness knows what I did with my comment! Is it me or my computer? One of us certainly has issues!

  11. I think, these days, Summer occasionally likes to poke it’s head through the door, take a look around and then head back to bed with a hot toddy and a good book.

  12. Hi Derrick, other bloggers have complained about the lack of summer in England this year. You never know, August could be hot.

    1. We are still lucky with ours in comparison to many, Lavinia. Thank you very much

  13. I wonder if the younger generation thinks on “seasons” … it seems to me, it’s 12 months of year, and it could often be any old season.
