Twilight Approaches

This morning Jackie and I finished the ironing before she drove me to

Hair Design for a haircut, after which we shopped at Lidl’s store opposite.

I continued reading Doctor Zhivago this afternoon.

Leaves were silhouetted against the sky as twilight approached

while we enjoyed a glass of wine on the decking with views of

owls, ferns, busy lizzies, fuchsia Delta’s Sarah and Compassion rose.

This evening we all dined on baked gammon; piquant cauliflower cheese; creamy mashed potatoes; crunchy carrots and firm cauliflower, with which Jackie drank Chilean Reserve Privada Sauvignon Blanc 2022 and I drank more of the La Vieille Ferme.

  1. You look great, Derrick, I envy your full head of hair! I use a shaver every evening to take whats left down to almost gone. ???? Put a bowl of buttery, peppered mashed potatoes in front of me and I will be in Heaven! ????

  2. Great haircut, and how lovely to sit out in your garden.
I was thinking of you reading Dr. Zhivago, and I think I remember from your Knight’s Tale series that your great aunt(?) was in Russia when the revolution broke out?

        1. Yes, that’s it. Quite the adventure. And the follow up adventure for the sisters to get out of Estonia and that area by crossing the continent through Russia to Hong Kong and beyond is also remarkable!

    1. Thank you very much, Merril. Yes – your memory is right. Gwen’s series amplifies the story.

  3. Derrick’s smile, Jackie’s smile (Yes, I see those smiling eyes! 🙂 ), and the owls, bring me such joy! 🙂 Thank you! Beautiful photos, all of them!

    1. Thank you very much, Dolly. I used my 600mm lens to reach the roses on the far side of the garden. You know why 🙂

  4. I adore the Owls Derrick …we are in need of some wise owls these days …
“In Need of a Wise Owl”
I’ve been searching the planet for our wisest owl
One that doesn’t droop his jowl, nor scowl
Are you the clever owl who will lead our world
Perched there stoically with wings furled
The statesman of our ancient forests
And guardian of our forgotten promises
Wisdom radiates from your knowing eyes
What do you observe from your throne in the sky
Are we honest enough, are we even worthy?
Have we enough modesty, are we even earthly?

    1. A wonderful comment, Ivor. I do hope you will publish it on your site. Thanks very much

      1. Apologies. I have no idea why there are ??? as a comment. Please feel free to remove them because they do not belong there!!

  5. Though I don’t cut hair, I bet yours is fun to work on with its gleaming strands. Sounds like a lovely view and pleasant day.

  6. I probably mentioned the film already, but when you finish the book of Dr Zhivago. it might be worth an afternoon watching an absolute masterpiece on DVD!

  7. Looking mighty handsome, Derrick! You’re blessed to have such a nice head of hair ????????❤️ Also, I love those fuchsias! We had them in our yard when we lived in the SF Bay Area.

  8. I really appreciate your appreciation of roses, fuschias, owls, sky, light, mashed potatoes, silhouettes, your wife, your readers, wine, and haircuts. Your blog is a song of love for your “one wild and precious life”. Thank you for sharing it.
