From The Scaffolding

For a good part of the morning, as we sat round the kitchen table enjoying wide-ranging conversation with Nick Hayter and James Luke who had been driven inside by torrential rain lashing the Velux window above our heads we watched Martin, his not too waterproof raincoat decorated with rose petals, while he walked backwards and forwards from the Rose Garden to the heap of spent compost bags of green refuse he was adding to our next dump trip collection.

Nick was unable to continue his outside painting after the rain dried the skies but not his paint and strong sunshine warmed us for the rest of the day. James was able to continue the carpentry work and Martin

weeding and tidying the Rose Garden.

I was able to provide a gallery of bejewelled blooms, each of which is identified within it.

James had so enjoyed the views from atop the scaffolding that he volunteered to provide a set of views that would have been impossible from my windows. The last is from his mobile phone; the rest from my Canon EOS 5D. Locations are given with the gallery images.

Nick had been clearing out his garage from which he brought two mirrors he had thought might be useful one day. I don’t expect our garden was in his mind when he stored them there.

This evening we dined on roast lamb, mint sauce, tasty gravy, baby boiled potatoes, crunchy carrots, and moist spinach with which Jackie drank Zesty and I finished the Merlot.

  1. Wow, the top of your home provides some great views, Derrick!! Nice. Beautiful English countryside. ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

  2. It’s disappointing that rain stopped the painting, but what marvelous photos from the scaffolding! It is purely inspirational to see so far from there. I feel such satisfaction in getting that kind of perspective on where I am at a given moment. Now you have this enriched sense of where your home sits within the environment. I love that lighthouse! and the gorgeous garden paths.

  3. Holy cats, those views! James deserves a Maine “Wowsah!” I love the image of all of you sitting around the table “shooting the breeze.” (My father would have put it a different way.) This post sure made me smile.

  4. The photos from the scaffolding of your garden and the nearby houses and meadows are wonderful; what a beautiful perspective of fabulous garden, Derrick

  5. You have the best people working on your home. Great views from James, and I love your bejeweled blooms. It sounds like you are feeling better today.

  6. I really enjoyed seeing these ariel views of your garden. I’m glad the two of you worked that out. It’s so nice to acquire more garden mirrors as well. The vintage/thrift shop where I found mine several years ago has since gone out of business.

These photos also show off Jackie’s hard work and the pristine garden paths she’s left in her wake. Thank you for sharing these views.

  7. That surely was a unique view and provided us with an even better idea of your neighborhood. I love it!

  8. The gardens look beautiful, and I enjoyed the views from the scaffolding, too. I can picture a soggy, dedicated Martin working tirelessly in the rain.
