A Tale Of Two Wrens

James, assisted with the longer beams by his father, another Nick, worked more on the carpentry at the front of the house.

On a recent phone conversation with my granddaughter, Immy, we agreed to exchange artworks. Among others I sent these three cards

produced on scraper board in order left to right when I was 15, 16 (the age she is now) and 17.

This wren was drawn more recently. It is an example of a change in style happily enforced by a less steady hand. These and all the other examples I sent have appeared on previous blog posts.

By happy coincidence Jackie also discovered a wren hiding in the kitchen this morning. The first image shows the bird in the shadow against the table leg on the corner of the chair seat. The other two have it seeking an escape route which Jackie provided by leaving the door open and departing from the room.

This evening we dined at Rokali’s where I enjoyed Bengalian lamb and Jackie her favourite Paneer Shashlik while we shared special rice and kulcha naan, and both drank Kingfisher. The food, as usual, was excellent and the service efficient and friendly.

Knowing our waiter, Sid, would have been keeping up with the fourth day of the Test Match between England and India I quickly banned him from mentioning it because I would be watching the recorded highlights when I got home – as I did.

  1. It’s a beautifully rewarding activity to exchange your artwork … I exchange my poems with niece Kerri in Philadelphia, and she sends me her lovely drawings …

  2. I humbly agree, you are very talented and thank you for sharing with us. The drawing of the wren is lovely and bless you and Jackie for helping it find its way☺️

  4. Love your sketch. Silly wren coming in your house. A couple of times a mourning dove has come into our apartment. We feed them on top of the AC. They never find the right open window to get out of and we have to catch them. Many lost feathers later.

  5. Your wren drawing is lovely, Derrick, and your artwork as a young man is superb. It’s so wonderful that you and your granddaughter are exchanging your artwork.
I’m glad Jackie knew what to do. That little wren must have been frightened.

  6. Little wren was a messenger with good tidings! Glad Jackie thought to snap a few photos, and treated it gently. Your sketch of a wren is wonderfully organic. I am still amazed by your greeting cards from such a young age, too.

  7. What an appropriate title, and your artwork is lovely, Derrick. How magical to find a wren in the kitchen.

    1. Yep. He went into the kitchen for the close of play score and gave nothing away. Thanks very much, Crystal

  8. I admire people that can draw and/or paint like that. It was a very good likeness of the wren Derrick, thank you for sharing it. Birds are so much fun trying to get them out of the house.
