Between struggles with blogging posts today was spent on sorting cupboards; shredding and recycling documentation going back fifteen years; and making administrative phone calls. Unfortunately my shredder takes a rest every ten minutes or so.
There were no illustrations to https://derrickjknight.com/2021/11/13/a-knights-tale-63-a-course-and-a-change-of-position/ so I was able to post that late this morning.
I spent a considerable amount of time wrestling with transferring five scanned pages from Dombey and Son. In the event I gave up on the last one, to which I will return on another day. I don’t want to omit any of Charles Keeping’s superb illustrations.
‘They were all three put aboard the Son and Heir’
‘Mr Tootle, professionally clothed’
‘The little cavalcade drew near’
In ‘Mr Carker broke into a trot’ the dogs are the artist’s own embellishment.
This evening we dined on second helpings of yesterday’s Red Chilli takeaway meal with the same accompanying beverages.
I really like the header illustration with the dog embellishments. (The dogs make the illustration.)
It is so often the small details that enliven Keeping’s work, Liz. Thanks very much
You’re welcome, Derrick. The same holds true for fiction and poetry.
Indeed
Another challenging day with technology
I’m much more relaxed about it these days. Thanks a lot, Sheree
There is always so much motion and emotion in his lines. I agree with Liz about the dogs.
Thank you very much, Merril
You’re welcome, Derrick.
Dogs rule. šš¤©š
Yep. Thanks a lot, Pat
Thank you to Mr. Keeping, and to you, Derrick, for sharing these illustrations! You know I love when doggies appear! š
YAY for whoever invented paper shredders! š
Speaking of them…eons ago before we had one I asked my hubby to get me one for my birthday that year. (I do enjoy a good shred! š š ) When our youngest young adult kiddo found out the gift her Dad gave me she said, “Dad that’s a terrible birthday gift for mom!” Ha! š Then we told her I wanted that gift. So she was, “Okay. Well. Still not a great birthday gift.” HA! š
(((HUGS))) <3
Thanks a lot, Carolyn. At our stage of life these Birthday gifts are not easy š X
Your shredder sounds just like me!
Iām sorry to hear about your transfer problems. I may have a temporary solution (no not resizing). Itās late so Iāll send details tomorrow.
Thanks a lot, Sue. We are transferring to a new Broadband supplier on Thursday.
Which one are you using? Iām also thinking of moving. I was recommended but canāt remember the name of the one our guy recommended
It is going through Peacock’s. One based in Nottingham. I’ll let you know
And yes indeed Derrick, Charles Keepings Illustration are brilliant …
Thanks very much, Ivor
I hope that your technical problems get smoothed out.
We are due to transfer to a new Broadband supplier on Thursday. Thanks a lot, Tootlepedal
I hope that that works well.
It’s good that the shredder takes a rest. Ten minutes is about all the shredding I can take too. All that noise, followed by Julia complaining that the bits get everywhere when I empty it.
Ah. Those bits. Thanks a lot, Quercus
Yes, those bits. I have inherited my Dad’s heavy duty cross-cut shredder but every time I open the drawer to empty it the carpet comes to resemble the aftermath of a wedding.
The running dogs are the best part!
They are delightful, JoAnna. Thanks very much
Great illustrations! Of course every now and then, there must be a problem with technology!
Quite so, Ribana. I am much more relaxed about it now than I was. Thanks very much
You are doing a great service to Keepingās art by scanning and uploading them for those who donāt have access to the treasure. Dogs have a delightful sense of humour. They never let go of a chance to be a part of anything exciting happening nearby and make the proceedings spicier. Keepingās inclusion of dogs is a fitting tribute to their disposition.
Thank you very much, Uma. That is a really good observation about the dogs.
All shredders seem to have such issues! I love the horse sketches. They demonstrate the motion so well! I wonder how much time was spent on each illustration such as these?
I imagine Keeping worked very quickly. He was so prolific. http://www.thekeepinggallery.co.uk
Probably. Thank you for the link!
I wonder how long each of these finely detailed drawings took to complete – they are all marvellous. The speeding dogs are excellent – one can hear them bark as they run after the horse.
Thank you very much, Anne. Keeping was so prolific I imagine he was one of those artists who could just do it. His own full-colour children’s books are equally fluent. http://www.thekeepinggallery.co.uk
What a treat – thank you Derrick!
Sounds like a frustrating day!
Only really with blogging. Sorting was quite productive. Thanks a lot. Laurie
The “Little Cavalcade” is rather scary! I wouldn’t like to meet them in the street!
Thanks a lot, John. Haughty daughter and mutton dressed as……
Keeping’s illustrations really are marvellous, particularly the illustration of the little cavalcade which exactly matches my image of the charming ladies.
You are so right about that one, Sandra. Many thanks
Like your shredder, I’ve been having technology problems lately – I blame it all on sun spots! š„“
Thanks a lot, GP
I really enjoy how the dogs give motion to the header image. The Keeping illustrations are marvelous.
Thank you very much, Eugi
Charles Keeping did a wonderful job of getting detail and expression into his drawings.
He did. Thanks you very much, Lavinia. It is a shame that he died aged 63 while this series was still being published.
Who took over for him?
I laughed at your comment about your shredder taking a rest. If I’m using my heat gun to strip old varnish, and I turn it off after more than ten minutes of use, it refuses to come back on for 20-30 minutes. It’s not a malfunction, but a design flaw (in my opinion) or a safety feature (in the minds of the designers). Apparently those who are determined to protect us from everything in the world finally got around to heat guns, as reports are that every brand functions the same way.
Thanks very much, Linda. It is probably themselves they are protecting
The dogs are creating a stronger impression of rapid movement in the last of Mr Keeping’s exceptional illustrations.
They are indeed, Dolly. Thank you very much
You are very welcome, Derrick.
It sounds like you at least were getting things taken care of. I always consider that kind of day a good day. Not fun, but a relief to dispense with things needing to be done. You have a lot of shredding to do I am sure.
Thanks very much, Crystal – especially for all the reading
